Title says it all. I can’t post to the thread but the pics are under shared under my profile.
18psi safety release valves.
Don’t recall the barrel rating but it was wellllll over 15psi and that’s not even factoring in mandatory and generous safety margins on all the ratings.
Many said not to. Used them many times. Only had the safety valves go off twice.
Happy to answer any questions.

Sounds good, congrats!
But make sure to check them regularly, those things are no joke.

How do you deal with negative pressure after cooling down?
I‘ve once had the problem of not opening the vent in time and my autoclave build a negative pressure. Luckily nothing was damaged but keep that in mind!:smile:

Kind regards,

Sebastian

With sealed bags…Drop the burner output down. Remove tiny fridge magnets off the regulator weights (the weight isn’t heavy enough to create 15psi) till the pressure lowered from 15 down to 10 then 5 then turn off the boiler. With jars just turn off the boiler and wait. They cool slower with that many of them and all the glass insulation.
I figured out the timing and temp of the lid as checked with a laser (I forget the number) and would be there at the right time to remove the weight so as not to create a vacuum. You can feel with your finger when the barrel swaps from exhausting out hot air to sucking in outside air. I mostly used them for jars with filters and all that jazz but would just seal my bags inside when using those. The key is just low and slow to warm up.  I didn’t burst too many bags/filters along the way.
Cheers

I'm crossposting sandman's post to warn people not to attempt this shit.

Uhh 55 gallon barrels are not rated at any pressure because they are not pressure vessels. 18 psi barrel of steam is so unbelievably dangerous.

To be very clear no one should attempt this ever.

There is over 8,000 pounds of force on the lid and bottom of this thing, each, at 18 psi...for a 24" diameter circle at 18psi

while it is insane that these havent exploded on you, yet, you must be within 2 or 3 cunt hairs of making these explode at any moment bro...

I think RR used 55 gallon barrels at like 1psi for like 12 hours and you get the same results of PCing.

THIS IS 12 YEARS OLD, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

I have made a barrel also. I do 1 psi of pressure regulated by 28 inches of water column. I would never go more... That's scarey AF

I have had good experience running my pcs under powering  at 10psi with same timings as 15 or more psi. I modified my pcs and removed some safety features in order to bring up the boiling times. It used to take forever. I also marked my stove with tape and a line that keeps me just above 10psi. pretty cool build. you could easily add a weight and its threaded part they are extremely cheap, then you wouldnt  have to worry about going over your rated psi and also the  negative pressure as it slowly vents

You run your pc at 10 psi for the same length as a 15 psi cook?
That's just wrong.

Please explain, 10psi for a 15psi cook time is inadequate.

Whoa!! cracked the code! Now we can all be making spawn by the truckload. I wonder why all those larger farms spend so much money and effort on large autoclaves and retorts? :death:

Wait. So you put a stainless drum on a burner, installed a pressure gauge, and what is that hose coming out the bottom, or pipe or whatever?

So wait what your telling me if this is more like a PC with a control valve? IT has no release and needs to be controlled by heat?

I think your frickin on to something too. What are the drums rated for pressure wise?

You got a safety on that lol?

Looking at your pics you have more than 1, and seem like you can afford to put your experience to use. I like it. Kinda scares me, but I think that makes me like it more.

I mean that's what I want to say. But I need OP to justify something. The pressure rating. I can't find anything immediately that would recommend a steel drum for pressure use. I do know they have stainless and non stainless versions that I would assume would have a difference in ratings especially considering the price.

But I mean fuck, look at this.

Be careful OP.

And please provide more info.

How do we know this is safe? Pics or it didn't happen.

Let's see you unpacking grains from those

However.....

Calculating pressure in pipes might be our best bet, you know like pressurized vessels and metal and stuff.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barlow's_formula

Here's a calculator even

https://www.amerpipe.com/reference/charts-calculators/barlows-formula/

The formula is P= (2*T*S/D), where:

P = pressure
S = allowable stress
t = wall thickness
D = outside diameter

So we're trying to figure out P

S=15000-30000?

20ga. (33 mil.) – 33ksi yield strength / 45 ksi tensile strength / G-60 galvanized coating
https://www.profab-steel.com/products/metals-amp-materials-specs

Cause the drums are 20guage steel I think?

What is a ksi rating?
Steel strength (or quality) is measured in KSI or Kilopounds per Square Inch with one KSI being equal to 1,000 kilos per square inch (you can convert to PSI or Pounds per Square Inch using a KSI calculator). The higher the KSI the stronger the steel.)

And apperantly 1ksi equals 1000psi...
Okay, but thos seems like the trickiest variable? Cause I've seen different stuff. Feel free to help

Perspectives
For welded pipe or tubes, the maximum allowable stress is 16,000 psi for Type 304 and 14,900 psi for Type 304L.
Nickel InstitutePDF

Low Temperature Data Sheet TYPES 304 AND 304L STAINLESS STEELS
Hence the value of allowable stress is 20ksi from minimum temperature to 300°F.May 31, 2020
Piping-world

Allowable Stress for Piping Materials as per ASME B31.3 - Piping-world
In the ASME Pressure Vessel Code the maximum allowable stress for 316 is 20,000 psi, but it is only 16,700 psi for 316L
.Jul 1, 2012
provan.caPDF
COMPARISON OF 316 AND 316L STAINLESS STEEL ALLOYS
And that makes more since because I originally had like 15000 based on another article.. so maybe we will say 20k for general..?
Unless you got a better answer OP
...

T= 0.9mm (actually ranges from .9-1.5 iirc, this is safe) or 0.354"
D=23"

So using the calculator in the link with a allowable stress at 15000 we would get a pressure rating of
46.1739

At 22500
69.2609

And if using a allowable stress rating of 30000
92.3478

You know what kind of steel you got OP?

Does any of this make any since lol?

I hate to advocate for making bombs, but OP, you started it, your gunna have to help me finish this...

Interesting , I've never heard of this but my first thought was the joints on the metal barrel exploding. I just don't know man! Please be careful and update us with any progress or reports or anything.

While I don't trust the sides of the drum I doubt the steel wall is the weakest point. I imagine the little bolt holding the lid on failing or a weld holding the bottom stressing and failing.

Actually I don't see how the lid is held on but the only safe way is like a presto or aa with multiple physical locks holding it down.  drums have a locking ring with one single point that is holding the whole thing together. Lose that bolt/lever and lose everything.

It might work 100 times before it fails but when I does I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it.

I wonder with this cause yeah the fail points will eventually be the welds or lockring someday. And the lock knobs on our pressure cookers make them "safe". So couldn't we just wrap drums like this with a couple chains and some kind of steam shield to block a failure steam jet, anchor them down so they dont blast off like a rocket?

Or thick steel flat bars across the lid and bottom that stick out further than the barrel diameter, that have holes in them, with thick steel end-threaded rods through the holes tighten down the rods giant heavy duty clamp basically?

Ide bet it would inevitably puncture and not hold pressure. Even if you didn't die.
