Question about inoculation loops

I searched and found nothing. It appears that nichrome loops are not heatable with an induction coil sterilizer. I’m coming up empty finding loops that would be. I really love how easy and fast it is to work with the coil with a footswitch. Anyone have any recommendations that might help me keep an open flame out of my lab?

Make your own! I used an Xacto handle and a piece of vape coil wire that I looped and braided at the end.

I have no idea if it would work, but maybe a stainless steel dermatology loop? Might be worth a shot. I apologize, but this is the best picture I could find:
Full disclosure, it might be a terrible idea.
Conversely, you could sterilize cotton swabs wrapped in foil, as seen here. They work quite well for swabbing plates!
The vape coil x-acto handle that agent claret suggested also sounds like a good solution.

May just have to use the disposable plastic ones for a bit until you find one to fit your situation

I’m going to use the nichrome with a flame for now while I search for something compatible with my sterilizer.

It’s a little loop of metal for inoculating agar (or other things I guess) with spores from sporeprints or even syringes. You can make one out of a paper clip if you wanted. They’re just a little piece of wire bent into a loop at the end. The loop protects you from damaging spores.

So you “scrape” some spores onto the loop then gently rub them onto the agar?
I haven’t ventured into the agar world having mostly done pf tek grows and ground brf cakes to bulk but agar is the next journey, any info on your techniques would be appreciated friend!

It’s basically just a little tool to scrape the spores off of a spore print onto agar

And the reason you don’t want to use a blade is that the blade will damage some spores?

A blade works, but it is easier to spread spores around on a plate with a loop than a blade, IMHO.

These can also be used to transfer mycelium around.

Make your own loops using steel tie wire. Cut off about 8 inches of wire. Loop it around a screwdriver. Hold the ends with pliers and twist.

A loops primary use is for streaking plates. You make a series of streaks going one way then streak across those streaks going an opposite way. This allows spores to be put in lines which will give more points to choose from later and help isolate down genetics a little faster.

Get the cheap black wire and use a magnet to confirm it has ferromagnetic properties. Otherwise it won’t work with induction.
