Could you explain the significance of placing the shoeboxes in a larger tub? I was hoping the video posted by munch would have revealed that, however, the video is no longer active.
Thanks, really appreciate it!

What would you guys consider "too far away" for the lights? I have fluorescent bulbs and a strong led light, both at 6500K, which are located about 1.0 - 1.5 meters from my boxes. Should that be adequate?

Actually soaking up with a tissue f.x.?
How would a liner prevent this pooling of excess water?

As the sub shrinks, the liner sticks to it as it pulls away from the box. Condensation from the lid and sides run down between the liner and the tub, keeping the water off your substrate, and eliminating the microclimate that forms on the sides, which leads to side pins.

IMO As long as you can see the surface of the substrate well to check for moisture levels, it has enough light. They don't need intense light like some plants do.
Yeah, you can just take a paper towel and soak up excess moisture with. The liner would stick to the substrate as it contracts allowing condensation to collect on the outside of the liner and pool harmlessly in the bottom of the tub. Liners also make tub cleanup much easier.

Yep I usually twist a bit of a paper towel up tight and touch the end to the pool of water.
Besides the pooling the surface looks perfect.

Shoeboxes get all the fae they need through the little gaps in the lid.
If you are using the 6qt shoebox it has enough fae while closed, as long as there is no rubber gasket on the inside.
The rubber gasket will stop all fae but I have never seen a shoebox that had one.

Hey everyone! Planning on running this for my first grow. Been reading about oats not being great to use as spawn though, does anyone have any experience with using anything else? TIA

I've been using a 16 qt sweater box as of late and it has been blessing me quite a bit. 6th flush Malabars which just keep putting out, even when i don't mist for an entire day. I've noticed that the center is less concentrated than the edges of the box in terms of fruits, but i don't use a liner and one end of the box sits closer to an open window, so increased air flow. b My first runs were done with shredded PF cakes, followed by wild birdseed. Had no PC at the time, so used an Instapot. great success!

WBS is awesome and very available. I like an assortment of nutrients for my shrooms.

Like everything people have favorites and when they do they hate on everything else. I keep oats, wheat and millet. I use whatever I want plus what I'm using it for. Oats work perfectly well. I do prefer wheat though.

Oats work fine. My only issue was having to buy a 50lb bag at a feed store. It was only $11 bucks a pain to store. I only used a few pounds before I lost the bulk of it to weevils.
I have switched to wild bird seed and buy much smaller quantities at the grocery store.

Great, thank you. I'll give oats a whirl. Might have to buy a horse as a cover story.

We store our extra oats in 5gallon Home Depot buckets to keep bugs out of them. Works like a charm.
We also invested in some screw off lids for them (similar to Gamma Seal, but off brand), for simplicity.
