There's a tek for that: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28092415
Baba Yaga's using EZfelt rather than SFDs, but same same.

If I’m going from PF jars to shoeboxes with coir, do I need to dunk them before shredding? Do I include the dry verm layer in the mix or discard?

No if you’re shredding to bulk that means you’re adding hydrated coir or coir and verm. Remove dry layer of verm.

I could be mistaken here wait for clarification.. I think you still dunk the cake but skip the roll for sure. Maybe Screwup read this wrong? I could be wrong for sure, wait for someone to call me out or reaffirm my statement.

No need to dunk if you shred to bulk. The substrate will provide the water, just make sure you get it to field capacity.

Shredding to bulk is generally not recommended as it defeats one of the main purposes of PF, which is not spreading bacteria around if it is present.

What you can do is just bury the cakes in coir but leave them whole. Load them into a bit just big enough to hold them all and fill in the gaps with coir. You just want the top to be barley covered, no need to go deep.

Ah, this is a cool idea and although I’ve been reading the forums extensively, I haven’t seen this mentioned before. Will they still colonize the coir throughout? Do I add a layer of coir at the bottom first so they don’t sit on the plastic? How does this work when fruiting?

You were 100% correct. Remove the dry verm and the hydrated sub provides the water

Nvm, got confused reading the nested quotes6

Wait, now I’m confused. Shred or bury?

Bury. And the only person I've really seen talk about it is Pasty, I believe it was on discord though.

No need for coir on the bottom and you fruit it like a tub

There’s a few others on here that do this. You can do the math for yourself. The perimeter of a regular 70mm qt jar multipled by the width of the SFD equals an area already in excess of a 1/4in hole. The threads stop some air exchange, but it’s not enough to necesítate a separate hole in the top.

:mindblown:
That totally makes sense, wow.

Sent these on Sunday. The jars were all a bit bacterial - some more than others.  Ok or don’t get my hopes up?

Hey all! I just had a really decent first flush. I soaked the tub and then, on a whim, I put down a small casing layer of coir and gave it a good spray. I guess my question is…should I let it ride or should I go and scrape it off? It’s been about 10 minutes and I’m second guessing it.

I wouldn't have cased it personally, but after I do things on a whim, I do tend to just let it ride.  I assume you have some more spores, and the things needed to grow more shrooms, so might as well see what happens with these.  Glad to hear you had a successful grow!

Yeah I figured. I’ve only grown garbage for the last year so I’m hopeful but these jars weren’t the best to begin with so we shall see.

As i just learnt today, from Ayeplus, you dont want to compress bacterial spawn, because you want it to breathe more!

Ah...

Yeah I heard Faht, now with 33% more faht apparantly, say after colonized grain spawn has been broken up it benefits from FAE to help it recover so maybe they are two in the same idea kinda...

My question is: If i keep doing transferring from agar to agar from the newer part of growth will senescence be a problem? Should i try to keep amount of transfers in minimum to acquire the best result?
