Hey guys,
Just wanted to ask a quick question about softened water. It just popped up in my mind and I donโt know if the salt would affect making grain jars or hydrating substrate. We have a water softener as we have a really high iron content In the water and it was wrecking appliances.
Not sure if anyone has had issues with softened water. I believe there is a spigot right before it goes into the water softener where I could get un-softened water.
Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you!

It would be best to just use the hard water before it hits the softener. The mushies love hard water and it saves you money on regeneration.๐คท
FYI, water softeners donโt put salt in your water.

Okay awesome, it is good to know that they like it. Good think I thought about that as I was going to use the softener water. I assume salt in it might not be good?

The salt just cleans your resin during regeneration. Softeners donโt put salt in your water. Either water is fine, but itโs just a waste of soft water.

Do you have pretty hard water? For us we have a lot of iron and everything will go brown in less than a week prior to getting one. I think if there is more stuff in it then there will be more salt in the water. I guess Iโll do the hard water as there is a spigot I could attach a short hose to, then test the softened water later on to see if it makes a difference

If I remember correctly I believe the hard minerals are swapped with the salt in the resin and the salt that is swapped goes into the water. I have a warm mist humidifier (boils the water) and I always get a salt buildup after awhile.
Edit- Just did a little searching and this is a good article and it looks like a small amount of salt will go into the water: https://www.uswatersystems.com/blog/water-softener-how-do-they-work
Not sure how the salt would impact mushroom growth. But I guess it depends how much salt is in the water?

There wonโt be added salt from the softener. I just sent a sample of my potable tap water out for lab testing. It had a higher sodium content than softened water. Itโs a very common misconception that water from softeners make salty water, but itโs not the case.

So i spawned this tub maybe 2 weeks ago. Was going good then stalled when we got a cold spell in our area. I moved it to a warmer location and it hasn't progressed anymore. Does it take awhile for it wake back up after being cold? Thanks

When I travel, I stall my colonizing shoe boxes at 7ยฐC. After I pull them out, it usually takes about 2 weeks for them to really take off again, but Iโve never had it effect yield, so youโll probably be good.

Mates , Do you think itโs safe to take a cake out of the SGFC. Perhaps introduce it , to the water tub? Or I need fresh cakes I have a few , thatโs only been in the SGFC for 3 days . Thanks

In my opinion a water tub is a much better environment for your cakes. Transfer those suckers.

Wow ok ! You know I read about , 48 hours with the lid tight. Then proceed, cracking the lid a few centimeters. My question what step would I need first ? I read about the water droplets and will be looking for those !

40 is a standstill, 65 is still on the cold side, but it will grow, if you can keep it around 70 youโll get alot faster growth..

Could it be someone heard "filled to capacity" and thought they heard "field capacity?" "Filled capacity" makes a lot more sense.
And to think I'm writing this and not stoned. lol
I think it refers to how you'd find coir a day after a rain in the field, with adequate drainage. That's how I've always thought of it, at least!
Coir in a field? Alright. I have visions of a farmer with a field of coconut husks.
Filled capacity seems right to me.

I just converted that to 4.44ยฐC. The last time I tried that low, my boxes didnโt recover, which is why I upped my stall temp to 7ยฐC.

Well the concept applies to non-coir substrates, too.
