I STB'd 2 shoeboxes last night using 1 mycoquart (Ecuador), with roughly a 1.25-1.5 ratio of coir, including the casing layer, for each. Put up somewhere that I have to use a tall step ladder to get to so I don't keep constantly checking on them (watched pot never boils). Temps fluctuate from around 73-78. Just want a rough idea of when I should start checking for pinset. I know this is an art not a science so just wondering what people's experience is.
straight to based shoe boxes!?

If you have a gnat problem keep a close eye on your plates and jars if you have unmodded lids. Gnats bring mites. Mites bring pestilence.
QQ: if I clone a fruit that took 5 weeks spawn to harvest (MS), does that determine that the clone culture will also take a long ass time to fruit? Or is there not a strong relationship?

Hey guys, I need your help. I have a dilemma. I had an ultra early bottom fruit (I think it's from a pin on a piece of crumbled cake) that now got to full maturity. The problem is, the rest of the sub is still waiting to pin (it's been 14 days since spawning to bulk). Now I'm afraid this bottom fruit will rot and screw my whole sub up. But I'm also afraid to disrupt the sub to pull it out.
Can I leave it without fear until about 2 weeks later (hopefully) when I get to pick my 1st flush? Thank you!

STB = Spawn to Bulk.
I went from agar to grain to shoeboxes. Think I have the right hobby. Sorry you misunderstood, or I was not precise enough with my language. Do you have any experience with shoeboxes or were you just trying to point out problems with my question/language?

It won’t hurt anything, but it’s an indicator or a couple things.
1) Your sub probably wasn’t well compressed, causing that space you see on the sides. 2) the bottom of your sub may end up having the best conditions now and might pin first. If that happens, just carefully flip it over and fruit upside down in a water tub.

i was just making a joke, as STB means "straight to base" when extracting dmt. No ofeence meant at all!
Spawn to first flush is roughly 20 days. 10 days to fully colonise and another week + to see fruits. Give or take.

No worries. No offense taken. Appreciate the info and if I decide to STB some dmt, I'll definitely look you up. 😁

Sous Vide people - what temp do you keep your agar at in the water bath before pouring?

Thank you MojaveMyc and San Pedro Girl!,
yes, the sub was put really loosely, not pat down, just leveled with a ruler. Realized my mistake right after. Thanks for the advice on flipping the sub! Cheers.

I pour at 60°C, but I like it hotter than most.

I think the sweet spot is around 150°F. Doesn't create as much condensation and will take the shape of the plate before solidifying.

I’ll give it a shot, thanks!
Edit: so between 140° and 150° is good. I can handle hot I just don’t want it gelling up on me. Thanks lemon and SPG

I wouldn’t advise it. I don’t know anyone that pours that hot. I bet his temp/thermostat is off or it was a typo.

Oh hmm. I usually pour as soon as the heat is tolerable, ie as hot as possible. Never taken a reading

I use the Keep Warm Low setting on my Instant Pot after the pc cycle. That is 135f/57c with the water about 2 inches deep and the top of the bottles out of the water. I can pour 1000 ml pitchers before they start to get very thick and well before they get chunky in the flow. So I think you could still go lower. Some of the newer models have a sous vide function so you can pick your temperature, but I ain't fancy like that.

Lol I've poured much hotter than that, but condensation is unmanageable. I say 150 because I factor in time to take the agar bottle from the sous vide/whatever you may be using, settling into your workspace, and the temp drop as soon as agar hits the plate.

Is this with the same measuring device and how many plates are you making at once? What hot glove do you use to keep from burning your hand? It’s probably a thermostat that isn’t accurate. I have a 60°C lab water bath calibrated with a certified alcohol therm. I take my 500ml media bottle out, wipe it with IPA in front of the flow hood and pour 30+ 100mm glass plates. I have to use a rag wet with IPA or a hot glove to hold the bottle, but it never gels. Most pour cooler than I do.
If you actually do pour that hot or hotter, I can’t think of a good reason to and definitely think it’s bad advice for 99.999% of cultivators.</font>
