Does anyone have any advice for this presto canner I inherited?? I would love to use it, it's at least 40 years old. It has the old "rocker top" part. Is it possible to plug in a gauge instead, or am I good to use it as intended? I've seen it in use many times for food canning, but sterilizing grains is serious business and I want to stay safe and not blow up my house!

Can take a few days for the myc to bounce back but it looks like its beginning to take off again.

Do you see an emergency pressure release gasket? It's usually like a black plug of rubber somewhere else in the lid that will pop out if pressure gets too high.

It does indeed, I'm just a little in the dark on how to guage the pressure inside by the speed of the rocker top, it would really suck to under sterilize and waste grain or overcook it to oatmeal the gaskets look good, I can order those, I could not find a replacement rocker. I would have to replace it with a dial pressure gauge. This is where I'm worried, this thing is a dinosaur, I wouldn't be suprised if it's older than 40 even.

Doing half pints pf tek 4 holes with LC. After reading around, I want to do 2cc in each jar or 0.5cc per hole. Can someone confirm that I won't drown anything and it'll give me decently quick growth?

Two holes is more than enough even with mss syringe, let alone LC. I would personally use 1cc at most per jar, that means 1 or 2 inoculation holes.

Totally unnecessary to use that much, especially with LC, but to answer your actual question it'd be fine. I put an entire 10cc syringe of LC in a half pint cake and it didn't drown.

They used to make quality stuff back in the day, and if I'm not mistaken canning and sterilizing grains are basically the same thing. Grains go for longer though so you need more water. When in doubt increase your time a bit until you get the hang of it. If your grains aren't over hydrated to begin with you shouldn't have a problem turning them into oatmeal?

Probably stupid question but all the answers that I've found are either inconclusive or dated. Do we still re-dunk brf cakes after every flush? If yes, for how long? Around 12 hours?

Appreciate the confirmation of beliefs. Ultimately I haven't done enough research into reusing syringes so I'd like to use up my whole syringe across the 6 half pints I've prepped. Unless it's really as easy as recapping in my SAB 🤔

You're rocker is weighted for a certain pressure, probably 15 psi.
You don't need to gauge anything. If its constantly rocking its over pressured and losing steam. Bring it up to a constant rock then dial back the heat til you get one little rock of release every 30 to 90 seconds or so. The idea is to keep the pressure in. Not lose it.

Now for my question lol. Anyone know anything about aeruginascin in cubensis. I have toque here with green spots that don’t rub away. Potentially an indicator of aeruginascin alkaloid usually found in woodlovers but most recently appearing now in cubensis?

What makes you think this is indicative of Aeruginascin?

I just finished my first cloning attempt. How long does it take for myc to show on agar after inoculation? I'm holding my breath and hoping it will be a success

I can see tiny strands of myc growing outwards after 1-2 days, same as any other transfer.

Depends on temperature too. There is no need to worry though, as something will definitely grow on the plate.

Thank you! You're right, I've watched this baby can hundreds of jars, just never grain to my knowledge. I'll make sure I log my attempt, you made a really good point about the water in the bottom.

First time swabbing a mushroom. I swabbed the gills of a big PE fruit whose cap was nice and open. The swab turned dark which I assumed meant spores were now all over it. I let it dry then bagged it up. About a month later now, I used it to streak a plate. I never got any growth aside from a single dot of contam. What happened?

Without looking at a picture of the gills it’s hard to know. Sometimes spores take a long time to germ. Maybe you didn’t pick up any spores from the fruit.
Same thing happened with my Bluey Vuitton.
Also it’s worth noting the swab can change colors due to bruising, too. Not just spores.
