That plate is contaminated, looks like the bacteria won the battle. RIP
Nothing wrong with your agar recipe

Putting fully colonized grain spawn in the fridge is a common practice when wanting to delay spawning.

I would just leave it were its at now. Even when it gets fully colonized you can leave it on the shelf for a week or two just fine.

Just want to add its better to store hydrated coir with the lid slightly cracked not sealed to prevent creating an anaerobic environment.

Lol I actually was about to bump your question because I too am curious.
I may be wrong but I believe mycelium will grow into the agar in a translucent state, and just becomes visable when it reaches the surface and has access to air. I could be wrong though.
edit: hindsight was faster

A good example of mycelium growing through agar would be the sandwich method. Just because you cant see the mycelium doesn't necessarily mean its not there.

First time I made agar I tried to pour it hot af, dropped my bottle and covered my SAB floor with agar. Almost wanted to cry lol, and that was before I lit myself on fire using iso and a lighter in my SAB. Like rotnpins said shit happens, thats how we learn

Smellyhobbit said: Hey guys, quick question:
I have one of those short, fat half pint jars with a puck of colonized PF substrate in the bottom. I don’t need it for anything, I was just running tests on the method, and I popped a layer of coir on it to see if it’ll give me a little fruit. I just put the whole jar in my water tub with the lid off.
Do you think that will be sufficient, or should I make a little hat for it or something? Suggestions welcome.
You could put a plastic bag over it with some holes in the bag if you want.

Q1. Purpose of cooking oats is to hydrate them.
Q2. The pressure cooker sterilizes everything in the pressure cooker, however once you open the pressure cooker only the inside of the jar remains sterile (which is all we care about)
Q3.cheesecloth would work i put mine in a colander in the fridge overnight to dry them.

Your tub is exposed to air the whole time, that fact isnt relevant, grains are still colonized and coir is still inert.

san pedro guy said: Yea, clean spawn, clean growth, the coir was already exposed to everything so why is it worse after the myc is spreading?
It would just delay you colonization why do you need to mix your sub if the grains are already mixed in?

Slants are your best option for long term storage of a culture, dont want to freeze mycelium.

Did you remember to poke holes in the bag? Its fine if they touch the bag they will make room for themselves

The other one I decided against it and they are appearing to be normal pins while not developing into blobs so far.
APEs dont blob like PE do. A casing is not required

I like to use a .5inch or so top layer at spawn for APE, but here is a tub from when I first started that had no top layer or casing.
