Quick question...after preparing the grain, filling the jars, putting them in the pressure cooker, are the jar lids supposed to be tight or slightly loose? Thanks.

As if: laminar flow hood [Re: SirPsycho]

I have a room air cleaner with a HEPA filter and an internal UV lamp. Any chance of utilizing this as a "ghetto" flow hood? Would this be better than a still air box?

Drying temps [Re: Nichrome]
    #28072103 - 11/27/22 07:17 PM (1 year, 1 month ago)

My Nesco is only 425 watts but heats to (non-adjustable) 180-degrees. Isn't this too hot? I haven't used it on mushrooms yet (only apples) but 180 seems awfully hot. What is the upper limit without damaging the little critters?

Why does 180F seem hot to you? Every TC writes of running food dehydrators at max for 24 hours. Go with the max temp setting.

Even if there is theoretical degradation due to heat (I’ve not seen this mentioned anywhere) it is insignificant compared to degradation from wet fruit exposure to atmosphere.

Dry hot for 24 hours to win the race. Going too cool or not long enough is a mistake.

As a newbie I, admittedly, don't know shit from shinola so I was trying to reconcile conflicting information about drying. From a different thread it was stated, "There are several ways to dry them, but we will only cover the best way. What ever you do, don't use heat to dry them. Heat is very harmful to the psycho-active compounds. You will drastically reduce the mushroom's potency if you use heat to dry them." And this was followed with a non-heat drying procedure. It is about halfway down the treatise (above the illustration) https://www.shroomery.org/8411/The-Magic-Mushrooms-Growers-Guide
But from this discussion I feel comfortable using my heated dehydrator. Thanks to the many who chimed in.

When you go to reply to a post in a thread, there's a "Reply to:" line and a "Subject:" line. Just let those autofill, and don't type in your own new headings.

Leave the subject line as "Ask Quick Questions, Get Quick Answers". Reply to who you want that comes up in the drop down "Reply To"

Excellent, thank you.

This forum is littered with tons of old data that was the best we knew back then, but is not correct anymore.  That's why we have warnings about how old things are.  I had that same misgiving initially thinking I'd have to half destroy a dehydrator to remove the heating element.  I wonder if we should have a tek that goes over all the outdated advice that leads to this confusion.

Don't get stuck on old shit. Got it.
Now what if I search and find an old thread (say 8 years dormant) but it doesn't have the "old shit" warning on it. Is it OK to REPLY with a question or better to start a new thread?

OK, last question about drying.
I understand "dry them till they snap like a cracker." But can one overdo it? Dry them too long?

Grain jars stalled :-( [Re: Nichrome]
    #28081823 - 12/03/22 06:42 PM (1 year, 1 month ago)

My first attempt. I have done a lot of reading since my inoculation and realize the many mistakes I have made. Naively, I thought this was going to be easy.
I inoculated 4 qt jars (oats) with PE LC. Looked promising, mycelium appeared after 7 days. Started to colonize the oats but then all four jars went into pause mode. One seemed about 75% colonized, one barely at all (about the size of a walnut), and the other two in between. The photos are of the most colonized jar.
Any hope for these guys?

Forgot to say these were inoculated 31 days ago if that makes any difference. Salvageable?

presurized grain jars [Re: Nichrome]
    #28092402 - 12/10/22 07:26 PM (1 year, 1 month ago)

Quick question:
Well my first attempt at grain spawn was a flop. Looked promising but then everything went into permanent pause mode . Throwing them away, I went to open them but the lid was on so tight I had to put it in a vise and twist with both hands to loosen the lid. The lid came off with a "pop." (same for all 4 jars). The lids are plastic with a SHIP and a .22 micron filter. Shouldn't the filter have allowed enough air exchange that the jars were not pressurized? Any ideas on what I did wrong?

Second QQ: Your favorite way to clean previously contaminated quart jars
