One of my 2 cakes never pinned.  I birthed, dunked for 20 hours, rolled and have them in a tub on pearlite. The other cake is growing away.  Can I re-dunk the cake, roll it and see if it pins?  Or, is it shot?

Damn auto correct!  Yes, I asked about re-dunking.  Thank you!

Hey, apologies for the bump.  I have a brf/verm cake that did not produce any pins in the FC.  It's been over 2 weeks and my other cake is fruiting.  Can I re-dunk the cake and reroll it?  Or, is it a loss?  Thanks!

Here are some picts.  One cake is fruiting while the other is not.  They were treated exactly the same.  Can I redunk the one that never started, reroll it and try to fruit it again?  Is there anything else that I can try/ ought to do?

Thanks!

Looks like the blob fish variety. Just a dunk should suffice. Depending on what those are, they might do better with a coir roll. :mushroom2:

Thanks!  The blob is Yeti - no idea why it grew that way??  The other mushies seem to be growing OK.  I hope they are safe?  I'm on the steep learning curve.

The dormant cake is B+. I have no idea why it never pinned.  There is no contam that I can see??  I will try to dunk it tonight and re-roll tomorrow.

Several of my agar plates (petri dishes) did not fully cover the bottom of the dish when I poured them. There is up to a quarter sized area that has nothing.  Is this an issue other than the myc not having agar to grow out on?

I spawned a jar of colonized oats today.

It is mixed ~1:3 straight coir, lightly tamped and leveled and I then added a 1/4" layer of straight coir and lightly patted that layer flat.

The tub has 3 holes near the top on the short/handle sides and 2 each on the long sides about 1.5" up from the substrate. The lid is closed.  The holes are visible in the last pic.

Can someone please let me know what I should do differently at this stage- ie. Should I cover the holes with mp tape?  Anything else?

I have a couple of questions on a couple of different stages I'm at...

This is my current tub that is 4 days past spawning.  It is a 1:3 straight coir mix, tamped and leveled and then another 1/4" coir topping that is also tamped.

Should I be tamping the top layer?  I read on one thread that myc likes ridges and valleys that create microclimates.  I am not seeing the droplets every good tub has.  My tub is 7qt, has 3 holes on the short sides near the locking clip and 2 on each side about 2" above the sub.  They are 1/4" holes and are open (no tape or poly)  I am going to be making quite a few more of these soon.

I have quite a few pf tek also going (used up mss) and the myc looks beautiful to me.  I sure wish I could get this to agar rather than waiting to see if it fruits and getting spres or taking a culture.

Although I did 1:1 brf verm mix, somehow I have a way over amount of brf - I have no idea how, but the jars are very dense.  I'm hope to get jars that will colonize and actually fruit.

Here are a couple of shots of what I have going.  I have agar going too, but that's in another room.  This hobby takes up a good amount of space!  Haha!

Thanks for the responses... and I made a mistake in typing, I did 2:1:1 - 5 cups verm, 2.5cups each BRF and water.  I used a pyrex measuring cup for each.  Like I said, I have no idea why it's so damn dense.  Hopefully myc is able to get through the thickness.  As good as the myc looks, without contam, it would be great to see these jars finish and be able to be spawned.

Yeah, I'm too aware of the steep learning curve.  My labeling has become better and I now take notes.

It's a fascinating process.

Damnit, my tub slowed considerably and I am afraid of over watering it.

The tub is grain and straight coir and was created Sunday.  Up to yesterday, the colonization was moving very quickly.  Between yesterday and today, colonization slowed considerably - it barely made any progress.

I'm not seeing any other colors or growths (yet) but it definitely can be my inexperienced eyes missing something.

Anything you can see that I am missing?

Cool, thanks.  I was just surprised to see the colonization hit the brakes as hard.  There are tiny droplets, though I find I have to mist every day to keep them.

I'm 14 days into spawning - fruiting conditions right from the start - and not a single pin.  I see droplets of water and so I'm guessing surface conditions are correct.

Am I missing anything?  Is there something that looks wrong with my tub?  Is there anything I can do to promote pinning and fruiting?

I'm still so damn new, it's frustrating.

I am wondering if more fae would promote pinning.

qq regarding a PF jar I have. It was consolidating and lo and behold pinned before I birthed the jar.

What is the best path forward?  Do I still birth and dunk the cake?  Will that kill the pin?

I’ve got 4 PE cakes dunked.

When they are ready, should I roll them in coir and put them in a water tub or should I take a cheese grater to them and mix them with coir and add a pseudo casing?

Cool, thanks.  I’ll leave them as cakes.  I have another watertub of GT cakes that were rolled yesterday morning.

I’m doing PF tek as I have been doing my first agar work…. I’m on T2 now and will go to a T3 before setting my grains for a clean grow.

I also have this tub that I am afraid is going to be a goner.  A couple of questions:

It is on day 23 past spawning.  Although the myc colonized for the most part, it did not pin.  Now I am getting yellow to pop up in a few places - and maybe one pink spot?  I pulled it away from my other grow (I now have 3 tubs each in their own room!)

Do I try anything different?  I mist very infrequently as it seems there are beads constantly.
Do I toss it?
Do I just let it keep going as is?

Yeah.  I should have done the agar work and pf tek to get fruits.

Question on casing.

I had a tub that went from β€œjust give it a couple of days” to β€œit’s fucked” without the tub ever pinning … so I am trying to understand the mistakes I am making.  I know clean spawn is where I need to focus, but can someone let me know if there are other mistakes I am making?

I use 1-2” of casing that is FC coir.  I compact the casing flat and level with a mortar trowel
I have been mixing 1:3-1:4 spawn to FC coir
I compact the sub flat and level with the trowel
I manage misting based on the color of the coir and then water beads once colonized.

The biggest question I have is around compacting the casing layer and sub.  I understand that PE strains like compacted subs and casing.  Is that true for all other strains?  The pictures I see of other’s tubs look like the top layer is not compressed / flattened.

Thanks!

You don't need it flat. That won't inhibit pinning. It might impact how even your pinset is, but it won't prevent or inhibit pinning. 1-2" is a pretty thick casing layer. It can work but I have had issues with some cultures that will stall out with a casing layer that thick. They appear to "give up" on colonizing it because it's too deep and there are no nutrients to be found. I personally use very thin casing layers - 1/8" to 1/4" thick. I have never found any variety of anything I have ever grown that needed or benefit from a casing layer that is any thicker than that. 1:3 and 1:4 are good spawn ratios, however, if you are just starting out and having trouble with fruiting, you can up your chances for success by going with lower ratios like 1:1. 1:1.5 or 1:2. The lower your ratio, the faster your colonization will be. The faster your colonization, the better chance you have against contamination (in SOME cases, depending on where the contamination was introduced). You also need to ensure your coir is hydrated to proper field capacity. I think a lot of people get it too wet and it chokes the mycelium out. I am not a fan of compacting coir heavily. Plenty of people do it and it works well for them, but I have had better results with very slight compaction.

Thanks very much.  That’s very helpful.

My qt jars were at least somewhat contaminated as I used mss.  The myc appeared to take a while to start in the jars, but then grew quickly.  I was using up the syringes in pf tek jars and while waiting for my agar to start.  10cc is a lot of solution - and I still have some left!

I also think my first batch of coir was too wet.

I will try a low sub ratio and thin casing to see if that permits fruiting.
