Quick question?

Have just got my ingredients and pots for starting my agar adventure, would long tweezers and a craft knife suffice for tools needed?
Thanks in advance ☺ 🙏🏼

As long as you sterilise or at the very least sanitise them before use you should be okay. I used a craft knife for my first 6 months or so.

Quick question...

How long is agar (no pour method) ok to leave before inoculation and are they ok stored in cupboard?

With no pours I usually put them in the fridge. They keep for months. I’ve had no problems using plates that’d been PC’d and then refrigerated for about 2 months but I’m sure they’ll last MUCH longer

Obviously this isn’t best practice and when you start seeing the puck visibly dry and shrink you’re gunna want to dispose of them.

Storage in a cupboard is fine for at least a few months or so I’d say.

The thing about a mycology toolset is you think you have everything you want/need and then some clever bastard on here posts something innovative and you have to go out and get yourself one.

For me walking into bargain shops is dangerous. So many things that are obviously not for cult and you think “ooh, that could work!”

I not long ago bought a tool for smoothing icing on cakes. Works great for levelling off substrate in tubs.

Quick one:

Upon pasteurisation of HP based sub. What’s the window that it becomes optimal to use? 3-7 days sound about right?

Quick question, how often do you all change your blades ?

Pretty much when it’s too dull to cut the agar accurately. Few months for me.

Myc Hunt, a few months is impressive.  There is not mich warping or damage from the flame sterilization ?

That’s when I change it, when it’s just too warped and blunt. Usually about every couple months. No real need to change it much more often than that. That’s me personally though.

Yeah, I agree.. better safe than sorry.. I like knowing for a fact my blade is clean. since you're using a SAB, just use a cooling plate..

Working in front of a hood makes it a lot easier.. I just flame 3 blades and set them on a jar to cool while I unwrap the plates I'm transferring from/to and then start with the first blade I flamed, it gives it more than enough time to cool.

That’s a sweet work surface, where’d you get it? Currently in the market for something similar.

If you do a search for "monitor stands" on Amazon, there are a bunch of options.

I'm pretty sure these are the ones I went with.. I got 4 of them (they come in sets of 2) and I took 2 of the legs off of the one on the end so it would fit on my table and give me a workspace across the whole length of my hood

Appreciate it bud 👍🏼

Are these safe?

I had to leave for a few days, these are penis envy. They went too long, lots of spore drops? turned quite black, veils broken, caps folded up. Do not look like the others which were harvested in the first flush from this cake.

I would suspect the cake is done?

Spore drop on your sub is not ideal but it may go another flush. Are you sure they are PE? They look more like PE#6 or something.

Almost ready to start my first grow, getting a couple spore syringe and jumping into AGAR.

How many PP dishes should a noob start off to start isolation? Plan on doing 3 different types, and not like the practice won't hurt, maybe 3-4 plates each?

I was swimming in agar dishes when I first started. My advice would be just go crazy and get as much practice in as you can getting your technique down.

There’s no right or wrong answer here, just do as many as you have time for or can handle in your workspace.

Making a flowhood work surface out of stainless. Do you think I’m better leaving it bareback stainless or putting some rubber belting on top (for grip for glass petri’s etc) or going half and half. Here’s pics of the belting and the stainless work top.

Was gunna cover the whole thing but then was worried about shit dropping into the crevices of the grip top belt.

Never mind . I’m gunna polish it up and leave it stainless then cut a piece of belt half the size and just use it as and when required rather than gluing it in place. That way I can remove it for easy cleaning and use it when I’m pouring agar. Problem solved! Thanks for your input Myc Hunt. No problem mate, happy to help.

Yeah any thin piece of metal in a circular shape the size you want will work. Go to the supermarket and look at tinned food. Find the size you want then just heat up the rim and push it through the side of your tub.

Perfect everytime!

As long as the centers of the grains are hydrated and not white then yeah that'd work. That's all I'd worry about.

Well with wbs if you try to go until they are all hydrated then you will get wayyy too many burst grains. At least this is my experience.
I'm not sure why but the grains come out darker looking when I prep this way than when I do a soak and boil before PC. Almost like they are over cooked.
I haven't been prepping this way long enough to say if there is any difference or not but I can tell you they colonize just fine and aren't going bacterial on me.

My point was to tell y'all about my bucket in bucket strainer it's dope also use it to strain when boiling. No problems with melting or anything like that. Main downside is the strainer bucket takes forever to make. Drilling all those holes isn't fun
Edit: for to make sense.

Isn't a beer bag in a bucket/pot the same thing as a holed bucket inside a bucket?

Completely different mate, unless you can get like a 0.0010” drill and drill like 2000 holes in the bottom of a bucket with any ease
