Do you seal your swabs up right away or are you supposed to let them dry?

I pop em back in immediately and seal with tape.  I do only swab one side of the tip tho so maybe that plays a role but I have 0 problems from doing it this way.  Lots of ppl with clean swabs from me to back up the practice, me thinx

Yes they can be pc’ed (personally, I do 45mins @ 15psi).  although, some syringe barrels and plungers are not pc’able.. they get bent out of shape.

I like dukal 6” plastic shaft cotton swabs.  They won’t break in transit and they’re non porous unlike wood.  They’re a tad more expensive but their ref# is 9026

Yes.  I usually soak it in bleached water for an hour and then rinse

I’ve reused many times.

Check out the Water tub though.. much better than the sgfc, imo

Anyone have a link to a reliable grade 3 vermiculite that comes in at least 2 cu ft bags?

https://www.acehardware.com/departments/lawn-and-garden/lawn-care/soil-conditioners/7194988
I use this and it worked perfectly. Its finer than most of the others I've seen

Sorry didn't see you said 2 cu feet. This is about less I believe

Hmm doesn't say it's grade 3. I don't like the fine stuff for tubs. Plus that's only 8 quarts

https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-15281/Vermiculite/Vermiculite-Grade-3-4-Cu-Ft-Bag

Gotta order 2 but that’ll set you up for a while

It’s not a quick answer but maybe you haven’t seen it but Pasty’s tubs work really well and there’s not a lot of drilling (1/4”) holes.. definitely much easier than the older style holes and you don’t have to cover the holes with anything

Bro, that looks so much easier than drilling the larger holes and stuffing.  I'm surprised that I didn't know about this design. Not quite as easy as Bod's no mod design, but still pretty easy.  I like the fact that the smaller holes don't ruin the tub for if you need to use it as a storage container when you move or something.  The larger 1.5" holes were always prone to cracking on me if I tried to put heavy things in them and move em' around.

I will say that Bod's method of filling the no-mod tub with water for harvest is genius.  You can't do that with Pasty's design.

Yeah it’s definitely a smart fix but a liner will also fix that problem along with side pins (generally) and safe on water I suppose.  I’m a liner guy til I die tho but I can definitely see the attraction to no liner if you’re doing a ton of tubs… anything to cut back on the “chore” of growing in that sitch.  I enjoy most of the processes of growing though but I’m also not donating all my time to it.  There’s arguments to be made for all sides which is why you could always do both and see which you enjoy more

Cakes are usually very dense.  It’s doesn’t absorb easily.  There’s an old af tek where ppl would stick drinking straws into the top of cakes and fill them with water and the cake would slowly take on the h2o and then you fill the straw again until it stops absorbing it.

You can also use a thick casing layer on top and bottom that you water directly over 2-3 days to kind of “slow dunk” the cakes

Another third to a half as much if you pull it off.

Millet can be a very productive stuffs.

Awesome good stuff thanks you both! That FP+ is gonna be a PITA…all small noodles less than 2 inches tall and not even as thick as a pencil. This yeti took me 2 hours to harvest and clean ffs. Can only imagine the FP+.

The fp+ fall off the sub when they’re mature.  I just grab em by the handful

This 16qt took me about 3 mins to pick

I dry em first and then stick them in a large ziplock and shake the shit out of them.  Cleans em really fast and easy

I notice your surface after flush looks barely touched, is that just FP+ that does that or other strains?

Also I'm going to get into 66qt tubs and some people say to use electric knife or cut them but am curiuos about the stubs left? Should we cut them as low as possible or just huge stub and when do we know when to rehydrate after we leave stubs etc? Is it always before second flush and how do you do it or sometimes wait till 3rd?

Someone kindly gave me a bunch of prints like:

Costa Rica
GT
FP+
Jedi
Taz
John Allen
Big Blue Meanies

And I'm in agar with Jedi but from the looks of it I will probably do FP+ next...

Thank you for any help,

:starwars:

There’s a few varieties I’ve worked with that fall off the sub when mature but PE is the big one and Fp+ is half PE.  Some varieties grab onto the sub like crazy.. Gandalf is one that comes to mind… it’s crazy how hard they are to pull off.. gotta cut those or you’ll pull half your surface off lol

Yeah cut when necessary and as close to the sub as possible but stumps are fine.. next flush just grows around them.  The stumps will start to fuzz up with myc.. normal

Since I’m here

Quote:

I’m a big fan of the heavy misting (point of pooling water) 2-3 days after a flush method.  Any pools left after the 3rd day gets soaked up with a paper towel.  This way you don’t have to mess with sub breakage and you can leave the liner on mostly intact.  Here’s some examples of 1st and second flushes with heavy misting

It gives you a lot of control and prevents the sub from being waterlogged; it’s easy to see when the sub stops absorbing water and it’s locked and loaded for the next flush

But you can also just add water to the sides of the tub like you said

Cased my PE tub with 1/4-3/8" coir and the fruits that are coming through are mostly mutant blobs.  What should I do different next time to get some that look like their namesake?  Thicker casing?  Verm/peat?

This is the PE casing thread by Tedsdead I’d recommend following

Heres a detailed recipe for making your own casing, but like Vibe said, you can use jiffy seed starter mix.  It isn’t as good as it use to be, imo.. they added coir and it just wasn’t the same for me after but it definitely works.

Here’s p9’s thick top layer thread

I’d say that’s about the right time to pull em all.  If you wanted to wait a little bit but avoid the spore drop from the bigger ones, just cut the caps off those (print them while you’re at it) and then grab the rest in a bit but I’d probably take the whole box

Thanks! So that means cut the pins as well, or should I leave the smallest ones for the second flush?

I’d just take everything.. if you’re going to rehydrate either by misting or floating etc, they’re probably going to get soaked anyway
