Making A DIY mushroom incubator and have questions about it.
    #27819112 - 06/14/22 10:17 AM (1 year, 7 months ago)

Basically, I'm thinking about making my own DIY mushroom incubator, something basic. For the incubator itself I was just going to use a black plastic storage box. Then I was just going to use a heat mat with a heat control knob on (I already have one but it doesn't show the heat you're turning it to so I'd need to experiment, it just has a plain black dial on it) and then a good digital thermometer.

However, there's a website that sells their own mushroom incubators and they have holes in them so fresh air can get in and they say this is necessary. They also have instructions on how to make your own if you can't afford theirs. It includes instructions on making holes in the box to allow for air flow which has had caused issues for me as I just want to make an incubator but don't want to make any mistakes so I figured I would post this here to clear up my doubts.

I have two issues with this:

1 - Wouldn't having holes in the box cause heat to escape and cause the temperature to not keep at the ideal level or cause it fluctuate?

2 - I've seen a few videos on people making their own mushroom incubators on YouTube and none of them include making holes on the box/incubator itself. I've also seen instructions on forums and none mention making holes on the box you're using.

If holes/air flow is needed, I was thinking of making a larger hole either side (instead of multiple smaller holes) and placing sponges or something like that in each hole. It would allow for air to flow in/out but also keep the heat in. However, if this isn't needed then I won't bother making any holes, I'd rather not if it isn't necessary. Or, if air flow is needed but the box essentially just needs to not be air tight and allow for at least some air to get in then I won't bother as most storage boxes are not air tight anyway and would allow for some air to get in.

Either way, if anybody has their own incubator that fits this description/anybody has knowledge on this, it would be greatly appreciated if you could let me know whether I need to make holes in the storage box I'll be using for my incubator. Thank you!

Incubators typically cause much more harm than good.

I get that I'm a newbie, however, I aren't growing shrooms in the typical sense; I'm aware there's a lot to it I don't know anything about. Anyway, there are these "inject and forget" shroom growing bags you can get. You essentially inject the spores into them and then leave it. All you need to do is keep them at the right temperature which is why I need an incubator. I just need to keep the bag at a set temperature so it can do its thing. Here is the product in question: https://mushbuddies.com/inject-forget-30%2F07%2F2020

I don't live in a climate where I can leave the shrooms to grow so I would need something to keep them at a certain temperature and I aren't planning on growing a lot so I don't need anything fancy. Just something that works and keeps the "inject and forget" bag at 26⁰-27⁰C.

Either way, I don't plan on using a box for the incubator I mentioned. I plan on using a wooden frame and then using those shiny insulation sheets to enclose it then use other things to bulk it out and make it more sturdy etc. I was just wondering if I should make the incubator so it's fully enclosed when it's shut or to make holes/a way for air flow/fresh air to get in.

In what sense? Bare in mind I aren't planning on growing shrooms in the typical sense. I'm planning on using these "inject and forget" grow bags. Link is here: https://mushbuddies.com/inject-forget-30%2F07%2F2020

I don't live in a climate where they'd be at the right temperature to grow so I just need something I can use to keep the bag at the correct temperature. I know mushrooms are easily contaminated but the mycelium will be inside an enclosed bag. I figured if I made an incubator and disinfected it then placed the bag in, it should be good.

I also plan on making an incubator using those shiny insulation sheets and using wood for the frame then padding out the inside with styrofoam wrapped in something that germs don't easily thrive on or instead of styrofoam, just more insulation sheets covered in disinfected plastic wrap.

Either way, if I do make said incubator, should I have it enclosed when it's shut or make it so there are holes/a way for fresh air to get in etc.

You should take this advice to heart and start reading more before you purchase anything.  Assuming that's PFtek mix in the bag, that's not horrible but the incubator will likely cause more problems than it will fix.
