Will my plan for my flow hood work?
    #27821075 - 06/15/22 05:28 PM (1 year, 7 months ago)

I recently ordered a Flanders filter on Ebay. The filter is 24' x 24' x 12' and has penetration of .007. When I bought the filter, I didn't realize how important pressure was and the pressure is quite low at .77" w.g. tested at 1000 CFM. All the guides say to have 100 FPM flowing through the front of the filter. That's something like 400 - 500 CFM coming out of a fan at my size filter. At that rate, the static pressure will likely be way too low for my filter to achieve laminar flow.

But, I've read posts on Shroomery that indicate up to 270 FPM is totally okay (and perhaps velocities around 250 FPM are even preferable). If this is true, then I could theoretically buy a massively powerful blower that delivers 1000 CFM at a static pressure of .8" to 1" (since 1000 CFM / 4 sq. ft. = 250 FPM) and use that in my laminar flow hood build.

What do you guys think? Could this work or should I just return my filter and buy another that has higher static pressure?

When laminar air hits anything (objects in the flow) it makes turbulence and eddies.

The faster the air moves the more turbulence is created from the same object.

Ideal clean bench speed is 90 fpm +/- 10, 250 would be nonsensical.

It would just make that much more turbulence when you use it which brings more eddies of contaminated air all over your work.

So post something of value rather than just making random posts to get your post count up.

I would normally recommend returning it but being from EBay could run into problems( probably not though) If it were amazon it would be much easier.
Also, I would recommend getting the right air filter for what you want instead of having to go crazy with buying a blower just to get to the 1000 CFM.
Whatever you decide, kudos on building one yourself and for anyone else thinking of it, there are some really good videos on youTuybe about it. Basically they cover what filter to get, what fan motor, and the size.. pretty much with those directions you can build a really nice one for around $230.... sure beats the price of ones over $1000!
