"In this post, I am going to discuss a DIY laminar flow hood (its not quite laminar flow but it works!)"
Literally the first sentence. I'm fucking sold, turbulent flow hoods all around

If that type of constructions are that bad, why people work with it and how they can do something without contamination?!
I read the topic linked above and my conclusion is: This is worse than just open air in average room.

Who verified that they work with any level of consistency? You can say whatever you want on a website, but that doesn't mean it's accurate or true.
The entire purpose of that website is for ad monitization - they even say it on the page and take a cut of the sales whenever those products are ordered.

Are FFU really laminar flow though? People use those and itβs just a blower behind a air purifier HEPA filter

Well, a few of reasons.
First, people on the internet... lie.
Second, people on the internet have different ideas of what low contam rates means. Seen people brag about 20% contam rate...
Third, their actual sterile technique improved and they are attributing the success to equipment instead of technique just like people like to attribute failure to everything but themselves.
Fourth, cause they could just do this in open air without issue. I've done a handful of open air transfers and they've all been clean.

I've done very little reading on FFUs, more like skimming but from what I've gathered they use a thicker filter that in combination with the right fan provides enough resistance to align airflow without the need for a plenum

It's not an 'air purifier' HEPA filter. It's an H13 HEPA intended for use in class 100 clean rooms as a ceiling tile. We just repurpose it by laying it on it's side and work directly in front of it. I tested my filter for issues when I received it to make sure there were no pinholes or tears and it certainly looks like laminar flow when tested with smoke.

So, that means there is no alternative to laminar flow, right? Something between real flow hood and SAB?

Exactly, it's either laminar flow or still air. No in-between

Test plate a week after leaving it open for 5 mins while I worked in it
Shoebox of cordyceps I made in my βblow boxβ. The rice sat open in there for hours to cool, LC dump and mix, and left to dry.

The only contamination issues Iβve had is from the stupid parafilm developing holes after I wrapped and checked them. Now I double layer the whole plate and havenβt had problems since.

That looks like a vertical flow hood to me, even has a plenum. Have you tested to see if flow is laminar?

No I havenβt tested with smoke, a lighter wonβt stay lit near the opening at the bottom. I spray inside with iso then let it run for 5-10 mins before I do any work in it. I just keep my hands downstream of the center area.

This type of design with the filter on top and opening like you have is a LFH design used commercially. If you happened to hit the math right just by chance that could actually have laminar flow. You do have the pre filter chamber that allows pressure to build up and could push through the filter evenly

This one may be actual laminar flow but I'm not 100% sure. Even if it is its 10 inches x 9.5 inches that's not even tall enough to pour a stack of agar petris, can't do grain to grain transfers, can't do basically anything with something that small besides one agar transfer at a time.

The FFU on mycology supply uses a air purifier HEPA filter (AP1518). Not sure how well that FFU is rated, but I figured if I was to make another one Iβd make it a horizontal. Iβd use that same filter (or a replacement filter to different FFU) and do the same thing but with a bigger blower and tote, then adjust blower speed as needed.
