New to Casing
    #27815142 - 06/11/22 07:50 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Whats Up everyone,

Just made my account. Been using shroomery for years and years.  My first grow was over a decade ago.  I wanted to get back into it.  I still want to use PF tek but use a very basic casing tek instead of SGFC. Things I would like suggestions or changes to have a ? mark after.
thanks guys!

I was thinking some coconut coir, vermiculite, and gypsum.  Put into a one pound foil bread pan? then put into a 66 quart plastic latch tub ( can i skip the bread pan and just case directly into the tub? drill some holes into the tub for fresh air similar to SGFC....

Questions: I would plan on producing 5 pf tek jars wait til fully colonized then grind with cheese grater...then add to casing mix....What would be proper ratios for casing mix...ie coir to verm to gypsum to water

What you are referring to is a substrate, not a casing. Yes you can go with those ingredients. You can also just go straight coir. Yes you can skip the bread pan and just go straight to tub. Yes drill some holes in the tubs, check out Pasty's EZ Dial tubs. As for ratios, I've never done PFtek, I just jumped straight into grain when I started growing a long ass time ago, and I don't want to make assumptions that it would be the same ratios without ever having done PFtek to monotub, so I'll let someone else speak on that part. Really I am just to lazy to do the homework for you that you could easily do yourself. The search function is your friend amigo.

What is the casing layer? are there layers to casings consisting of different materials...

ie ground cakes on bottom of tub then just top off with casing mix?  dont you mix the ground up pf cakes with your ingredients to create a casing mix....

I have done my research...i just like a thread being open for questions that may come up...

thanks for the response

in regards to the ratios ...they are not ratios for my cakes ...they are the ratios that i would need to create a substrate casing mix in my quart tub....

ie for 5 pf teks should i just fill in the tub with coir about halfway ?

Yes, what you mix it into is a substrate, not a casing. A casing is a non-nutritive top layer used for some varieties to keep them from pushing out blobs. Some people put a layer of coir on top of their spawn/coir mix (aka: Substrate) and call it a pseudo-casing, but it's not a real casing. What you are talking about is your substrate.

I understood what you were asking, and right after you said you did your homework, you said something that lets us know you didn't do your homework.

No, you don't just fill a 66qt tub up half way.

Here is everything you need to get your PF cake to substrate ratios down pat. Have fun

(there is also a neat little edit button where you can just edit your last comment without triple posting and spamming the boards)

I answered your questions up to the point of having to do your research for you when it's clear you haven't tried to do it, so I even gave you a helpful link lol. My bad. I'm just a mean jerk so I'm gonna take my ball and go home.

im going to use 1300g of coir mixed with 6.5L of water, ill throw in say maybe 5 cups of vermiculite maybe more verm til its the right consistency ( squeeze test ) ... before adding the cakes ill microwave the substrate 5 - 10 minutes let cool then add the shredded cakes....i saw some ppl not shred the cakes but that seems pointless  i guess ill just throw a bag in the tub whatever size tub ends up being the appropriate size for the amount im using and dump the mixture in then top off with some coir...sound good? any suggestions

That’s… that’s not going to lead to any sort of success, dude. Just follow any number of proper, proven teks on here.

Start with the link KROM posted. Tried & true.

Edit: And don’t use cakes as spawn. If you’re going to grow cakes, then do so. Colonized grain is used for spawning to a substrate. And a “casing” is a thin, hydrated layer of substrate used to cover an already colonized tub/tray/whatever to allow & help proper fruiting conditions in certain species. Cubensis not being one of them.

I broke up four cakes with a cheese grater and did this shoebox Tek.

I made 3 shoeboxes my first run.  I used coir/verm 80/20 ratio. Skip the gypsum unless you just have it and want to throw it in.  It probably won't help a bunch though.

There is no drilling holes of any kind.  It is a set and forget tek for many many places in the US.

I had a few straggler jars that I top fruited with a Sandwich baggie for the hell of it. I was on a mission to learn shit when I got here.

Good luck! Welcome to the Shroomery!

im going to try the 50/50 casing tek....its not much more in depth than what i said...even if i used 50/50 with the coir it still seems that it comes down to ratios having enough water and being sterile....

thanks for the input though.....made me reconsider using the coir...i think id rather use peat moss  ( nevermind peat moss is too acidic without a buffer )

i dont really have any interest in grain ....i like brf/verm...and i have heard many times that shredding and casing brf/verm cakes brings about higher yields ( more surface area ~ less aborts )  plus it just seems easier to manage ( easier to rehydrate )

Re: New to Casing [Re: Eskimo Blue]

It's simple and easy, just don't over complicate it.

1.  Make your cakes however you want, with whatever grain you want(BRF/PF Tek is grain, just ground up).
2.  Once colonized, open and put the contents of the jars into whatever tub you want.
3.  For every one part colonized spawn, add 2-3 parts of substrate (substrate = coir and whatever else you want to add to it, such as verm or gyp(I use just coir and verm, mostly all coir and some verm to taste).  Pack all that down together in your tub and add casing layer should you choose to.  I personally use straight coir for my top layer as it's only purpose for me is to help retain moisture and proper surface conditions so the mycelium knows which direction is "The Surface".

Really the hardest part is over once your jars are colonized.  You can just open the lids and mushrooms will pop out...  They really don't need much of our help at all.  Also, as you figure it out, put less emphasis on words like moisture and water when figuring out field capacity... The real word is how dry it is after you're making it.  That will make sense later down the road.  Hope this helps!  :goodluck:

Also on main site, under Mushroom Info>Growing Mushrooms>Archive>General Cultivation  -  There is a list of all topics and recipes you will ever need in case no one here is awake and answering questions at the time.  I would use that to check out different ratios and recipes people use for substrates and casings and more.
