Is this contamination or normal?
    #27813659 - 06/10/22 04:58 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

I’m in the pinning stage of my first bull grow. I started with 2 mono tubs and the first failed with green mold. The second looks good and is pinning, however I’ve noticed what looks like spiderwebs, on top of the vermiculite. Is this Mycelium or some sort of contamination?

I think it might be fine, keep an eye on it. You'll know soon enough

Unfortunately, I also think it looks like mold. If it is mold, my condolences, but don’t get discouraged!

Well per the recommendations here, I sprayed/soaked it with 3% H2O2. Surprisingly it was non-reactive to the H2O2, so I decided to remove the affected layer of vermiculite using a spoon. I think the vermiculite may actually be the source of the contamination itself as it was just a bag of organic vermiculite purchased on Amazon and I really didn’t do anything to prepare it for use.

One of the things that doesn’t really make sense with this being cobweb is it hasn’t really grown it’s stayed pretty much the same for at least a week. Kevin cobwebs rapid growth rate I should have confirmation whether the steps were successful in a couple of days I would think.

You shouldn't have just vermiculite on the surface of your substrate, instead mix it in so its colonized also.

Vermiculite holds water and can mold easy before the rest of the substrate can get a chance to colonize it.

Just following the suggested procedure from Midwest grow kits. They suggest a 1/4 to 1/2 inch layer of vermiculite on top to hold the moisture in. Maintain the moisture is particularly difficult here in Vegas. I just implemented a home brew humidifier and inkbird controller, it is maintaining well.
