Hmmph.

The size/shape points to Panaeolus. However the color is off...unless the color is weird in your pictures.

Black spore print? Well between that and the shape of the cap we can determine its definetly a Panaeolus of some sort. We need better information and pictures to determine the species.

Can you give us some better descriptions? Where specifically are you located in the midwest?

I dig that first shot just cause I'm into 'extreme shrooms'... how's the stalk length compared to the cap diameter mate ?!? Seems like that shroom forgot to grow a cap, then remembered sporolation at the last minute and generated a pissy little excuse for a cap with the last shred of reserves it had left... chuckle... the pics do suck a bit (soz g-hazer, but U said it), but that stalk:cap ratio is the most discrepant I've ever seen, and I'd be surprised if even the mythical mj has a pic in his archives that can equal that ratio...
(consider the gauntlet thrown...). I'll measure up the ratio based on the screen shot tomozza, when I have a better chance of accurately determining 'how long is a piece of string...'

Are the colors in this picture a little more realistic?

yeah, my camera sucks, but it's all i got. the color of the cap is a little lighter than the photos let on...to be more exact on location, it was found in the mid-missouri area...think it could be a panaeolus sub? there was a few baby mushrooms around it that i'm gonna go back and check out tmo. i'll bring the camera out with me and maybe they'll be more helpful....thanks

Nah, they aren't subbalteatus for sure.

They could be some form of campanulatus, but, its hard to tell.
