Casing Layer, 100% Colonization, Consolidation, Pin Set And Fruiting???

So I am trying to figure out what is the best method to getting an even and good pin set. What is the best method for casing with coir? What works best for you? Should I case before colonizing and let the casing layer be consumed? Should I wait for the Mycelium to poke it's head out? I forgot this part and had it down packed before but I am always too anxious and constantly looking for pins. Any help would be very much appreciated.

A lot of ppl (myself included) have had good success with using a 1” compressed (after compression) coir top layer added at spawning with regular cubes. What variety are you growing? That can make a difference.. some vars. don’t even like a top layer at all (Gandalf for example).
Here’s p9’s thick TL thread. You can also play with timing as well. I find in a general sense, cubes colonize ~a 1/2” of compressed top layer in 6-7 days so if I want to use a thinner 1/2” comp. top layer, I add it after full colonization (usually on day 6 or 7 after spawning with a 1:4 sub).. I find the top layer will colonize more evenly if I add it to a fully colonized substrate which can lead to more even pin sets.
Its all culture specific tho.. you can play with top layer thickness and when it’s added depending on how fast it colonizes and starts pinning. I prefer that the fruiting surface is 80-90% colonized when it starts pinning so there’s lots of pockets for the pins to develop in.. I always get more pins with that surface over a surface that’s grown over and matted.

I should revise that to… I had good success with putting a very thin CV layer on my most recent Gandalf tub.. like just enough to cover the grains. 1/8”, if that. Only to protect the exposed grains while they rebounded after spawning

That was the plan Faht, I’m not a fan of exposed grains either. I’ll skip the P9 layer for Gandalf

So like I figured it's better to have some "wet coir" around the colonized Myc so it can have a better micro climate for pins. I fudged up a little and put too thin of a casing when I colonized so it took over the entire top almost. About 95% on most of the boxes.
right now I have Blue Meanie, Texas Yellow Cap, Menace (which is taking longer to pin than those two" and Costa Rican. Got a Long short Tote as well doing Cambo's and I think the top layer on that one is perfect, the Myc is "reaching out" evenly on it. Might fruit that in 2-4 days, it's actually the long box in my sig with the Albino's in it.
Also thanks for that thread. Been gone for a while so there is a lot more to learn and remember. That compression on the top layer, yes. Seeing the pictures of the Myc shows how it will branch out and pin. Also mentioned in that thread is a LEVEL SUBSTRATE! That is one thing you notice instantly helps pinning. +
