Is this Overlay? Why isn’t it pinning? First time Grower.

I’ve been looking around the forum trying to learn everything I can and I’m still having some trouble figuring out the issue with my cakes not pinning. They’ve been fully colonized for about a week. I believe they are blueing because they were dehydrated and I was mislead by an off site tek into thinking they didn’t need to be misted. Now that I have started misting, they have turned blue which makes sense, but the surface of the mycelium appears to have what I now know as overlay and has a more smooth texture. I was wondering if I could get a confirmation on this diagnosis and what could be causing it or if the forking method should be prescribed to deal with this issue?
I’m not certain, but I believe the last photo might also be showing the start of overlay?
Many thanks in advance for any advice, recommendations, or disses!

Hi,
Why did you decide against adding a casing layer?
I am new and just trying to learn. Thanks!

That looks kinda worrying to me. Kinda looks like it will explode in green mold anytime.

The last one looks like it may be knotting, which is good. The other 2 look like they need some help. I'm not sure if it's overlay as I have never seen overlay being newish to the hobby. I read somewhere on here that most of us will never see an overlay problem so I'm thinking it might just be matted from drying out and not a true overlay problem. I also read that forking will only cause contamination and will rarely help with overlay. I would wait for a TC to comment before taking a fork to your sub. Hopefully someone gets you a proper answer.

Hey I’m also a beginner, but from what I’ve read, a casing layer isn’t necessary with cubes. This is pure coir. I don’t use vermiculite because it is notorious for having trace amounts of asbestos which I’m not trying to include in something intended for consumption.

Not mold. Just the remnants of most of the surface layer bluing from being rehydrated. That, and the weird lighting haha

I haven't cased any of my cube grows and I've had no issues. I also do not cover exposed grains like some say you need to. I'm on my 5th bulk grow and only lost 1 tub due to improperly sterilized substrate I bought from a vendor when I started. Since then I been running bucket tek coir/verm 50/50 with no issues. My last bulk I got 6 flushes from and it just contaminated so I tossed it. I may case my Melmac when I spawn that though. I heard it stops blobs. I may run 2 tubs, 1 cased 1 not to see how it goes. Asbestos in vermiculite shouldn't be a problem other than breathing the dust when pouring it. I cut all sub off the stipes when harvesting so I'm not eating it either, unless I'm missing something.

I just had some myc blue from barely being dry and misting it too so don't worry about the blue. It's the powder blue green you gotta worry about.

This is starting to get off topic haha, but my main concern with verm is mycelium attempts to break down and use whatever is available in it’s substrate for energy to produce more tissue. I’m just concerned the mycelium might absorb the asbestos into it’s tissue and potentially end up in the fruiting body similar to how heavy metals will contaminate produce.

Thanks for the reassurance about that. Hopefully someone can answer my overlay concern.

Apparently the main issue I was having is this is P. natalensis. I was expecting the mycelium to look like cubensis, but apparently it’s WAYYY different. And most people see weird clumping of the mycelium when growing this species.
