Should I play Doom (2016) before Doom eternal?
    #27807344 - 06/05/22 06:10 PM (1 year, 7 months ago)

My parents heard I’m stuck at home cause I got Covid and got me a steam gift card. Anyway Doom eternal was on sale so I own it but didn’t download because I thought I should play the first I only played Doom from the 90s. I don’t remember a story in the 90s version has things changed? I could buy the original Doom but I was waiting I got some other games probably the most scary game I ever played called Detention disturbing concept. But you guys think I should play in order or does it not have a story? I really enjoy the new Wolfenstein games they where amazing.

There's a bit of a story between the two, but it's not really that present compared to wolfenstein.

Doom 2016 and Doom eternal felt a lot like the OG releases of Doom 1 and Doom 2. Eternal is a direct upgrade.

Story-wise, kinda the same. They're kind of connected, but it's pretty minor. There's even a pretty clear "screw story, I'm here to kill shit" cutscene in the very beginning of...I wanna say 2016, but it might have been eternal. Not caring one bit about the Lore of the game is literally part of the Lore of the game. If you do care about the story, you basically have to go out of your way to find it. Just like Doom 1+2 back in the 90s.

EDIT: Eternal has a lot more story, but they kinda pushed the over the top nature of Doom. Rip and Tear, which originally was from a comic making fun of 90s doomguy, is now the basis of the new doomguy, who's got some serious superman vibes. Doom 2016, doomguy repeatedly interrupts story monologue (usually by smashing things).

Gameplay wise, Eternal is significantly better than 2016. If you're only gonna get one, get eternal. Not only is there more content, but they changed some stuff up about the game to force you to have fun playing. Biggest thing: only 8 (upgradeable to 12) shots from the super shotgun. All ammo counts across the board are significantly reduced, forcing you to actually use all of your weapons instead of sticking to the ol' reliable double barrel like you did since it was released with Doom 2.

You're fine with playing Doom Eternal before Doom (2016).
If you read the logs in Doom Eternal, then you won't miss out on any of the story.
