My vent tubes are gone. The vent tube is unnecessary unless you're running a basket. (don'tuse the basket, that's retarded)

I've run my 1915x hundreds of times without a vent tube without issues and my 75x dozens of times without issues.

All that's required is that you warm up and purge sufficiently.

The 75x takes about 1 hour to warm up to point where I start my purge/vent cycle:

I purge/vent for 30 mins on the 75x; so flick on the unit and set a timer for 1 hour 30 mins then build pressure.
It takes a further ~ 40-45 mins to reach 20psi, that's where I set my dial. This allows my vessel to fluctuate between 17-20psi. I then cycle my bags for 4 hours.

2 reasons for the long purge:

1. To allow ample time for the unit to evenly heat across all metal surfaces;
(Warm up cycle)

2. To allow sufficient time for trapped gases to escape the vessel otherwise you will not reach correct internal temperatures.

Pulsing isn't suited to our applications, I wouldn't recommend building pressure and then rapidly releasing it to purge your vessel; simply allow your units to heat naturally and purge via continuous venting of trapped gases.

Note:

I use cold tap water in all of my vessels to allow for a longer warm up period, I'm not in any kind of rush. Even heating will guarantee an efficient sterilization cycle.

Warm up and purge applies to all bench-top sterilizers including your presto. If you're having mystery bacterial contaminations in your spawn this is where I'd start.

Ya it was a total brain fart on my part.  It should of clicked I don't used that much to make my plates lol just took what was said at face value even though I knew there should have been a decimal point.  Thanks all

FANTASTIC FUNGI, and HAVE A NICE TRIP watch on Netflix both are great.  Fantastic FUNGI had a lot with Paul stamets.  He talks about the big pile of diesel and oil by products put spores on and mushrooms suck up all the oil and broke it down to usable fruit.  AMAZING

Does anybody shake their jars upon reaching 100% colonization? I've always done this because that final shake tends to reveal hidden contaminants. I've had so many jars that look perfect all the way to 100% go to shit after a final shake and then they recover like ass.

I used to think that my inoculant was dirty but if that was true, wouldn't that shit start causing problems during colonization?

This jar is a good example. It looked healthy during colonization and after being shaken, the myc got fluffier and started pumping out metabolites. Been driving myself crazy trying to figure it out.

I shake 6 days after I drop agar in, then shake at 30%, and I’ll shake again at 70-80%. I feel like the wait time for letting myc move off the agar might also help contams grow stronger, if there’s any.

It’ll become very evident during the recovery of that 70-80% if it’s botched or not. I keep an eye on fully colonized grains, which with oats turn a little yellow when the myc gets a good hold of it. If they aren’t fuzzy 24 hours later, jar is tossed. Then I wait till 100% and spawn, observing how the jars hold up till then.

If the jars don’t colonized right you throw it away? Why not resterilize and noc up again?? Seems like wasted material….

It's dirty and already went through a run.  Chuck out the whatever cents in grain and start again.

Is there a good video demonstrating proper field capacity? The only thing I've seen is a GIF.. I'm pretty sure I understand FC, but I don't want to get 2 years down the road and find out that I've been doing it wrong the whole time.. seems like a video would be helpful.

I think there is not a perfect formula for the exact water ratio in your sub.
It really depends on your room conditions and the setup of your tubs.

I just give it a good squeeze and if only some drops fall at the end, its ok for me.

I've toyed with the thought but I've never actually tried it mostly because I will likely already have fresh grain prepped and sterilized by the time that the other jars go bacterial. I like to keep a rotation on most of my stiff for the days that I'm feeling lazy. X amount of jars get inoculated and the same amount of jars get sterilized and take their old place. Jars get spawned and inoculated jars take their place.

I'm not sure that reusing grain that contaminated and sat on a shelf for some time is the best idea. Whatever was eating that grain likely ate a lot of its nutrients and it will probably turn to mush when you try to use it again. There's always the chance that it'll dry out and the jars will stall too.

Again, this is just me making assumptions.

What do you mean it’s dirty? lol isn’t always dirty before the pc?

I coulda swore I saw someone smart say they do this.

I’m small time so I don’t care the price of grain, I don’t like the time it takes to cook then dry.

Yea I hear ya doc if you got your process that fine tuned doesn’t make sense to try it.

I have a pint that didn’t recover from the first shake. I have no ge hole so should still be moisturized, ill pc again and add some sslc. I don’t see anything that could go wrong

I just resterilized some very bacterial grains and they turned into mush so I just tossed it. But I know faht sometimes resterilizes grains with success. Im sure it can be done and I kinda wanna figure out how.

I’m sure there’s a point of no return if the jars are totally f ed up.

Here is the jar I was goin to pc again, only sign of contam is that the myc didn’t recover

Cant imagine how it would turn to mush (the bad kind)

I still think pc’ing fermented grain could possibly work and probably perform well. This is based strictly off a hunch with no scientific evidence whatsoever

I use GLC.. I know pretty quickly if the culture is bacterial because the glc grains I pulled the myc from won’t recover properly in the days after I use them or they’ll smell off through the filter and then the qts won’t catch good growth by day 5.  Then they get recooked.. I give the top grains a light mist and back in they go.

Here you can tell which ones were recooked by the darker color (left) and the new lighter grain on the right

They produced this PE flush

Fortunately, I don’t have to do it very often and I never do it with molds.  The latest time I did it was the last tub of this season.. this fp+ clone.. both wheat qts were recooked

As long as you catch in the first week, I don’t see a reason to throw the grain out.. it looks just like normal grain except it’s a lil darker.. if anything, most of the grains is REALLY clean.  I roll my qts on their side to distribute the 5ml of LC so it spread very thin all along the glass.. it’s nuked during that second run

I think it has to be that there was a tiny bit of bacteria in there and it spread a little more each time the jar was shaken. Then finally that last shake jsut happened to put it over the edge and it was able to get a foothold.

That’s the only thing I can think of that makes sense.
