Water minerals effects on mycelium
    #27805877 - 06/04/22 03:48 PM (1 year, 7 months ago)

I apologize if this isn’t quite advanced mycology but I figured the scientific minded folks of this side of the forum might help me better understand this issue.

This doesn’t affect all species and the ones I remember it happening to were lions mane, Gymnopilus and possibly P. mexicana.

I am on rural well water and was having issues with the species above on agar. The worst of them, lions mane, would maybe grow 1/8” out and then completely stall. This was grain water agar with the well water. I tried both oats and wheat grain waters to see if that was the issue.

Decided to completely switch it up and run distilled water and LME at about 1.5% and now everything moves along nicely. I haven’t tried boiling grains in distilled water to narrow it down further but I’m about to try using filtered water from the well to see if that does anything unless y’all think it would be a waste of time.

I know the easy solution is keep doing what I’m doing but I really likes the simplicity and recycling of the grain water agar and would love to get back to it instead of throwing it all out. Would you think there could be minerals or other possible ingredients that are negatively affecting the mycelium of certain species? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Two completely different nutrient profiles, since the LME agar was working well, it could be safe to assume the grain water you were using was fairly weak in nutrients enough so to stall it out.

Most likely not the water and the actual nutrient content

All of the other cultures I am growing did just fine. That includes: cubes, natalensis, pearl oyster, king oyster, chestnut, etc. Was standard boil until hydrated and drain dry. Full strength grain water agar. I don’t think the nutrients of the agar were the problem.

I guess I need to prep grains in distilled water and see for sure that’s it’s the well water. Or LME in the well water i suppose would work as well.

Just to not get too far off from advanced mycology, has anyone ever heard minerals or perhaps concentrations of certain nutrients commonly found in water to affect mycelium?
