would you spawn these?
    #27805867 - 06/04/22 03:40 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

got some bags ready to go. few of them had a lot of extra moisture, few of them looked a bit wonky. i had shaken up the bags when they were near 100% colonization to see how they recover / see if any obvious contams come out.

Wondering if its worth putting to sub or save them someway

bag 1

bag 2

wonky 1

wonky 2

Extra water bags that dont seem to have other signs of contam

All look really bacterial.  Top fruiting from the bag will probably be your bet chance at fruit.  It probably won't make it to first flush if you spawn it in a tub.

I agree with PBJ, they won't survive being mixed with sub

maybe a thick casing right in the bag and you'll have at least something turn up I would think

the dead giveaways are the wetness and slimy look of things in there generally, the pressed grain that looks like the centers are not colonized, the off white yellow metabolites. It's definitely no bueno but may still fruit a little if managed right

all the best

thanks.  just want to make sure theres something beyond the moisture and sliminess that can happen from 100% colonized bags

dope post, thanks a lot that does help. I just checked my next cycle of jars and theres nothing wrong with them thank god, so these cultures seem to be ok. I'll double check my steps and make sure i dont break focus for my next lab sesh and PC cycles

arent there ever bags with some extra moisture that are 100% ok?

Thick creamy growth thats hard to breakup, grains look wet/smashed against the container walls, slimy discharge, grains that aren't fully colonized by mycelium.

It's normal to see a little condensation if there are temp swings, but what you have is WAY beyond condensation.  What was your inoculation source for those bags?

some agar cultures. Cant say for certain when the bacteria came in i think it was during the lab work because of the inconsistencies- they are from different cycles so i believe one of the pressure cook cycles might have been bad too.  I'm top fruiting all of these now.

Here are some melmak jars that are recovering from a shake that are just fine.

If you're using large pieces of agar to inoculate the bags, try using a small wedge to see if it changes things.  Sometimes larger pieces of agar can bring over hidden bacteria colonies living under the mycelium.  Once they get a chance to expand in the grains, they go crazy.  Normally you can see these as spots of thicker/darker growth on the plate when you look at the plate with a light behind it.

Assuming your agar is 100% clean, It might be worth trying another grain/vendor just to see if there might be something with your grain supply.  At least with oats I've noticed some vendors products were extremely prone to bacteria issues possibly as a byproduct of the chemicals/fungicides that they are treated with before bagging.  The exact same culture from LC performed normally on another brand of oats.

I'd open them up.  If, in breaking them apart, them seem to just disintegrate with no cohesion, then they're probably bad.  Otherwise, that's not to far looking from my quart jars.  Some of the top areas on 2 look bacterial, just wash the infected portions out and throw it in the sub.
