hey yall

just got back from a long trip and i noticed about a third of my vacuum-sealed silica-gel-packed half-oz bags are bendy as fuck. its confusing because i have a very standardized packing procedure so i would think they would all be either equally dry or equally wet...not sure what this means, wondering if any of you beautiful people have experienced something similar

also...its probably been 2 months. should i dry and repack or just write them off? what kind of potency loss should i expect?

How long did you dry them for?

It is possible that some fruits were cracker dry while others were not completely dry.
The moisture from the not completely dry fruits may have spread to the others.

What type of silica gel did you use?

Silica gel constantly absorbs moisture until it is completely saturated.
You need to heat the packets of silica gel to drive off the moisture in the packets.
You can dry silica gel packets by putting them in your oven.

Based on the above, it's possible that you had a few rogue fruits that didn't get completely dried.
Over time these rogue fruits ended up spreading moisture to other mushrooms.

It's also possible that the silica gel you used was already saturated with moisture when you vacuum sealed your fruits.
Over time, the moisture may have spread to some of the fruits.

You don't need to use silica gel while vacuum sealing mushrooms.
I have stopped using it while vacuum sealing after going through this exact issue.
If the fruits are cracker dry, they're cracker dry. Vacuum sealing them should preserve their dryness.
Adding anything else into the vacuum sealed bag can potentially introduce moisture.

Yup. Dry the shit out of them and DOUBLE seal them. I don't even have to use silica. I dry them for a minimum of 24hr. All good.

You can re-dry all of your shrooms and vacuum seal them again. Make sure they're cracker dry before sealing.

In terms of potency loss, the only way to check is by eating the fruits.

i dried for 24 hours at 165 F, silica packs were in the dehydrator as well, should that be enough?

mtz by double seal do you mean double bagged or do you hit the same bag with two seals?

That is a tough one.

The 24 hour figure is only a rule of thumb. The true amount of time needed to properly dry mushrooms could be much longer. Mushrooms are ready to be stored once they are cracker dry.

This made me curious:
Does storing the properly dried mushrooms in jars with silica packets affect the potency due to the air present in the jar?
Depending on the answer I might have to pick up a vacuum sealer.

When you say ‘double vacuum’ do you mean using two bags? Vacuum sealing the first one then putting it in another bag and vacuum sealing that?

:imo: If you vacuum seal them, it's better to put them first in a ziploc with silica to prevent holes.

I would assume it does. Any exposure to air and light isnt a good thing.

Vaccume sealing is the way to go! I love mine. It's definitely a great investment and something everyone should have in their homes for cutting down on food waste anywho.

Edit: If you pick up one you can find good deals on bags on Amazon (Much more expensive in the stores)

I think some brands of vaccume sealers are designed to use only their expensive brand of bags, Id stay away from them. Last year I picked up this Mueller one and it works excellent with any brand of bags.
