Monotub after first flush
    #27802498 - 06/02/22 09:59 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

I got a good first flush from this monotub, harvested through a combination of cutting and twist-and-pull right before the veils break.  But now it has been sitting for almost a week and the stragglers haven't really grown and instead they're getting covered with fuzz (see photo below).  Humidity is still 85%.

Do I need to do something to keep this going?  Should I harvest these stragglers and then add water?  Or just wait?

What kind of tub setup are you using?  Are you manually doing anything to alter the environment or moisture (fans/fanning/misting/watering/heatmat/etc)?  I wouldn't harvest them until they abort/finish or you are ready to toss the tub.

3lb grain + 1lb verm + 1lb coir.  Fanning twice a day.  Haven't added any moisture.

you should have a high sub to spawn ratio, not the other way around, and you should never fan, let air exchange happen passively through holes or a cracked lid. im guessing your shit is dry. try soaking for a few hours then drain, OR mist it regularly until it steadily holds micro droplets on the surface. thats your best hope for a second flush

:whathesaid:

I guess that kind of explains all the weirdness I'm seeing.  The tub looks like it's being choked for FAE but there's no condensation on the walls since there's no moisture left in the substrate.  Fanning is useless for tubs - you need to setup your passive FAE correctly so it will be working all the time, not just for 2-3 minutes after you fan an otherwise sealed tub.  Try using 1 part spawn to 2-4 parts substrate next time so you'll have an appropriate moisture reserve.

Ah ha, thank you!  I'm going to halve the spawn in my next tubs.

I'm not sure why there's no condensation on the sides of the tub anymore: I pulled the remaining shrooms and larger aborts, and they were very moist – almost soggy.  And hygrometer still shows the surface of the mass at 85%.  (I use a gallon of water for the 2 pounds of substrate.)

I do have four lower and two upper holes in the tub covered with micropore tape for passive FAE.

the hygrometer isnt a great tool for this unfortunately. you want to see evidence of moisture on the surface

measuring RH is only useful if you’re running tents/humidified rooms. in monotubs its more important to read your surface conditions, which should look like this at all times after full colonization. condensation only tells you that there’s a temperature difference between the inside & outside of the tub, it’s not indicative of proper moisture (though my tubs usually do have some condensation on the walls, but again doesn’t necessarily mean anything)
