Jars - Contamination or just senescence?
    #27802363 - 06/02/22 07:20 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

I have  a few jars that were a bit to old, about 40 days since inoculation. And some of them were getting a bit of a funny brown-ish color, mostly under the filter in the lid:

I threw them away just to be safe. But for future reference it would be nice to know whether this is contamination or maybe just aging / senescence. Anyone care to comment?

Also out of 75 jars, there was one that looked like the contents had shrunken quite a bit, and the texture looked a little bit different from the other jars. Plus there is a tiny green dot there in the middle:

Now I'm wondering if this is indicating something fishy like contam, or wether I might just have forgotten to shake that jar and that's why it's still in one whole piece that has shrunken like when PF cakes shrink during colonization?

Btw I bought these filters from Beacon Hill:

I'd assume that they were tried and tested and not leaking in any contamination.

Yes they are contaminated. Walk us through your process.
