PSA: Don't ever buy Ziploc containers for cakes

I just spent all of my money on a huge set of Ziploc pp5 jars to use for cakes. When I drove nails through the lids, every single lid broke into multiple pieces. I now have no money and no cake jars. Fuck ziploc
Edit: I am now calm and realize that was a dumb mistake. Gotta use heat next time.

I had the same question. A drill would have worked much better. That's what I used for regular metal lids because it was easier to deburr.

Or heating the nail, if you didn't do that.

So wait...you saying if you force a metal rod through a thin brittle piece of plastic with a brute force, it will damage the thin piece of plastic?!
Of course trying to drive a nail through plastic was a bad idea. Thats why everyone else uses a drill or melts a hole.

What is your preffered method of melting a hole? I dont own a soldering iron and the nails I used were like half an inch long so they couldn't be heated and held at the same time. Do I just need longer nails?

That's a good question I honestly have no answer for. I guess I just got mad as fuck at myself for thinking I wasted my money and out of anger I just drove nails through every lid.

Also, you don't need to mod ziploc twist n loc lids at all. Just leave them quarter turn loose

According to Albert Einstein, the definition of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
Next time you run in to an issue, I would recommend coming to the shroomery for advice after the second time something has failed using the same methods. It will definitely save you some aggravation and hopefully some money. ๐ฐ
I use the ziplock twist lock containers for everything from agar, to bottle tek, to grain jars... there is no need to modify the lids... just keep the lids loose about a quarter turn.

This must be a joke, use a pair of scissors if you struggle with a nail, just heat the tip of scissors and push it through. The hole doesn't have to be round, I can't believe your logic to be honest.... fuck the lids up and then complain they aren't good enough.

hey OP, I had an idea iโll throw it out there:
You can still use the containers if you use some foil as the lid, wrap it up super tight around the top, then when pc cycle use another standard foil loosely wrapped so when you remove it after the cycle it doesnโt rip off both pieces.

Thank you San Pedro guy. This is what I am going to do with these jars now.

Thanks for the scissors tip! That's the best tool I've used so far.
