he was saying we should be able to torture terrorists and some guy said law prevents it and we shouldnt torture. then bill made a hypothetical that if terrorists had a nuke in the USA and we had one of em captive should we torture? and the dude he had on said no, and that the hypothetical was dumb and far-fetched...then billy boy lost it...so funny

Apparently Bill doesn't realize that people will say anything when they're being tortured, not necessarily the truth. Torture doesn't work as a means of getting to the truth, only as a form of punishment.

If the person being tortured wants to live, they will tell the truth. If they think they think that death is a reward, then sexually humiliate them.

I used to listen to him but when he started accusing people of being un-american because they were anti-bush then that pretty much made him irrelavent in my eyes. I turned his show on the other night and lasted about 10 minutes before he started the good/bad american routine.

No, they will say anything to stop the torture. We will not know right away whether it is the truth or not.

It would really depend on the context of the situation on whether a response could be immediately validated or not.

If we're trying to just pump them for information that we had no previous knowledge of, then no, the information couldn't be deemed reliable immediately. But if we were asking for information to something that we already had some previous knowledge of, then it could possibly be verified in a relatively short time.

We have the technology now to hook someone up to a brain scan and show them pictures of people places and things and be able to tell if the subject recognizes them or not.

oreilly flipped his fucking lid tonight, he almost had a heart
attack...

I kind of empathize with why he almost flipped. O'reilly asked a
question and the guy wouldn't answer. He blatantly tried to
subvert the question.

O'reilly asked what if terrorists had a nuclear weapon
and were threatening to use it and America got ahold of one of them
and had to find out where the bomb was.....would American personnel
(military or intelligence) be allowed to use torture to find out
where the bomb was?

This question had nothing to do with the deplorable actions at Abu-
Graib(spelling?), the legitamacy of the Iraq war, or the correctness
of American foreign policy. And yet, that guy kept trying to bring
that stuff up.

There are some simple facts in this whole hypothetical argument:

1. There are many Muslim terrorists out there who are trying to
kill as many Americans as they can.

2. They will go to any extent to accomplish their goals.

3. It is possible(not probable but within the realm of possibility)
that terrorists could get ahold of a nuclear device.

In my opinion, if the threat was real(we knew the nuclear device
existed and it would be used against us) we would have every right
to do what we could to avoid the deaths of millions of people. If
that means using torture, then so be it.

Quite honnestly turture will bring you no closer to acquiring the knowledge you originally desired. If the person cares about his own life then he/she will say anything, anything at all, to stop the pain and further damage to their own body. If he doesnt care about his/her own life(but cares about his/her cause), he/she will most likely lie or say nothing at all. So all that if accomplished is that those involved in the torturing (those inflicting the pain) will become tainted and no better then those wishing the death of the innocent lives. Violence cannot solve problems and it is this will to dominate and make everyone believe what you believe is what makes ppl hate Americans so much... If you could just leave ppl to do what they want, in their own country which is none of your business, then maybe the problem would solve itself.

So you think that taking a young man, pumping him full of sodium pentabarbitol and MDMA (one of the better "truth serum" concoctions) and abusing him wouldn't get you the truth? Is this more liberal claptrap, or do you have evidence of how effective torture is or isn't.

Yes, that's true, I remember reading about it. I also read that someone has developed a lie detector based on a similar technology that they claimed couldn't be circumvented.

I just don't think that torture should be ruled out entirely. It shouldn't be commonplace, but if a situation arises that it may help, I think we should reserve that right.

However, most of what was seen coming out of Abu Gharib: the womens clothing, the nakedness, and other such humiliating things, I think are relavent techniques to break down the will of a person. The sodomy and beatings though go too far as a routine.

If we were a nation with an umblemished past and with truly benevolent and honest leaders, I wouldn't really have any reservation about using torture if deemed necessary. Our world being what it is however, it isn't a decision I take lightly.

We can debate the integrity of America and who's actually at fault here but, the threat we face is real. If a credible, severe threat exists that could potentionally be prevented by torture, my ego - with it's unwavering policy of self preservation - believes we do what we have to do.

What I would envision as a justifiable reason to use torture probably only happens in the likes of shows such as 24.

Torture is effective as a method of vengeance if you have no human empathy, but if you're trying to get the truth out of someone, especially someone who believes dearly in their cause and are willing to die for it, using torture is a waste of time. There are more effective ways by far, if an underground atomic bomb was to go off somewhere in America in 1 hour and we've captured a terrorist who knows where it is, he could just yell out New York when really it's in Philadephelia, and by the time they checked underground in New York it would be too late...

Using technology and substances to find the truth is more effective than torturing if used rightly, but even these I would not support unless under the most radical of situations.
