Best next steps to continue experiment?
    #27800961 - 05/31/22 11:11 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

I'm at a crucial point in this experiment and can use some guidance -
I'm working with:
Colonized bags/jars of three different strains
2 bags of prepped substrate from Etsy
Vermiculite, Coco coir and Gypsum pellets (not powder)
18 qt tub with holes drilled and microtape

I've been here three times before and got:
- A partial flush followed by stragglers
- A bout with Trich that stopped over a hundred pins in their tracks
- A chamber that started out great (I thought) but stalled and never revived

Questions -
- What should the ratio be for colonized berries to substrate?
- Should I soak the mycelium before breaking it up and layering it with the substrate?
- Two of the bags are Ajax and Fiji that I got as a bonus when i bought some spores - can these share one tub since they're mostly an experiment?
- One jar and one bag are Tidal Wave, which is the main strain I'm looking to cultivate - What do you think about one with the prepared substrate and one with a home-grown CVG?  Or am I better off going all-in on the prepared to increase likelihood of fruiting?
- I have a partially colonized TW bag and jar - should I break those up and include the colonized portion with the others? Or hold off until it gets all the way there?
- I also have a non-responsive all-in-one bag that never colonized - even after two injections - can that be used as substrate or should it just be dumped into my compost bin?

I know, there's a lot of questions here, and I apologize for that - but i just want to pin down a successful flow without blowing more money or time without success.

Thanks in advance!

Fiji and Ajax bags:

Tidal Wave

Partial TW - (Started the same time as above, but in a different part of the house)

Hard to tell with the clarity of your pictures. The first picture the bag to the right looks bacterial - Un colonized grains and maybe even slimy.

In the last picture break up the partially colonized mycelium and move it around the bag to colonize the rest of it. It will take a couple days to recover after breaking up.

Ill attempt to answer your questions.

1) 4 or 5 quarts of spawn to 650 grams of coco coir that is hydrated to field capacity (Optional 2 quarts of vermiculite) Also don't buy on etsy. Just prepare your own in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. Its easy af.

2) Soak the grains for 5-10 mins or don't. Up to you

3) I wouldn't share a tub with two differnt types of cubes. Especially if they're both from multispore and not cleaned on agar. Your inherent risk of bad spawn will just increase further.

4) Make your own hydrated cvg. Its easy peazy, lemon squeezy.

5) Don't use grains that aren't fully colonized. Rookie mistake.

6) Don't use the bag that has failed. Throw it out. Prepping grains is also super easy.

Definitely definitely don't get into the partially colonized bag and add the colonized chunks to anything. You want fully colonized grain otherwise you're guaranteed to have uncolonized nutrients floating around your casing and it's just asking for a contaminated mess. The idea is to give the colony its best shot by allowing it to shore up and control all the available nutrient rich grain, THEN when it's stable  you're essentially giving it a little breathing room to fruit by mixing it with your verm coir etc, (less nutritive stuff) in order to help it maintain moisture and give it a base to form larger fruit bodies.

As far as mixing strains, I wouldn't. You could just get a couple trays to keep them separate in the same chamber if you wanted but given that you're having trich issues you might just keep separate chambers so you don't risk losing everything.

How long has it been for the non responsive bag? Id say after three, four weeks it's probably toast and I can't see it being any use to you. If you're thinking about mixing colonized grain with uncolonized grain in a tub at any point in any way then absolutely do not even consider it.

Like 001 said just about everyone here is going to recommend that you prep as much of your own stuff as possible. The more variables you have in your hands vs someone else's the better off you'll be if you want to do this hobby for real.. And if you're just messing around looking for an oz or two for personal use.. I know I sound like an old geezer but whip up a bunch of PF jars and fruit them or case them with verm. Grain is really an art and when you're still learning the ins and outs of things it can be a lot to deal with.

Brutal advice... Stop wasting your time 'experimenting' and buy a pressure cooker. It sounds like you've already made all the mistakes in previous grow attempts, why repeat the same procedures over and over when they don't work?

If you get a PC you can make agar easily and cheaply. Learn and master that first step, then master grain and clean spawn. After this point you're home free for some badass grows.

Good luck.
