From Cakes to Tubs - Tips Please?
    #27800900 - 05/31/22 09:51 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Hello All,

Success has been had with blocks and cakes through jars and bags … but it seems whenever move to a tub, break up the mycelium and add it to a substrate …  am always met with contams and need to throw away the whole batch and scrap the tub to avoid future contams. Waste of funds and time. :frown:

Don’t have a flow hood or anything like that, so curious if anyone has a method, or tips to help one get yields to the next level without costly setups. This is mostly for own interest and research… just sick of hitting a wall at this next step.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks

not sure what this means. Are you doin brf cakes??

You don’t need a flow hood, a simple sab will work great for working with agar. Working with agar gets you to clean cultures, clean cultures get you to clean spawn, clean spawn reduces catastrophic failures in bigger subs.

Used bags, with syringes and got blocks. Which has given some success, as well as BRF cakes from jars.

Though, when breaking them up and putting them in a tub, the fails.

How do you use Agar cultures, do you use spore syring or do prints need to be obtained/used?

Make an SAB (still air box). Costs about 10 dollars. Use the biggest tote / tub you can. I used a 107 quart tote. Smaller will be a hassle. Here's a good tek on making and using one.

Also read the post in my sig line, "New? Things I wish I'd known when I started here." Even though you're not new here, if you're still getting contams, there are things in that to help.

If you use a hot coffee can to make the holes, wear protective gloves to prevent burning your hand. Or hold it with pliers, and do it outside to avoid breathing fumes of plastic melting.

Spore syringes contain bacteria and other nasties most of the time unfortunately.

Agar is your best bet at having clean mycelium growth.

You can place just one drop from your syringe on agar and spread it with an inoculation loop. You can make one yourself out of a twist tie.

Then when that grows out you transfer the fastest growth a couple times to clean agar plates then when you are satisfied you can drop some or all of that plate on grain.

I like wbs cuz it is cheap and easy.

+1 for making a big ass SAB! You need one to keep everything clean!

Good luck!

Yes. Bird seed is great .

Penningtons Classic is 15 bucks for 40 pounds on WalMart, they'll even deliver if your local store doens't have it.

You don't need to remove sunflour seeds, some idiots say you need to. But sometimes there are rasins in it lately. Remove as many as you can. (there aren't a lot.)

Wash and strain it 5 times, throw out the heavy rock-like stuf in the bottom. (is gravel for "birds dino gizzards", as AKA said.) Won't hurt, but doesn't help. Toss it.

Then soak overnight, then strain and dry on a screen. Put in quart, large-mouth mason jars, with 3/8 inch hole in top. With synthetic filter disc on hole (I have link in my sigline post). tighten jars, Pressure cook with 3 inches ware water in bottom of PC.

Let it shoot steam out PC for 10 min, then put on stopcock with tongs. Let get to 15 psi not higher than 20 psi, let go 2 hours.

Let cool to zero psi. open, take out jars, let cool to room temp. Then set up SAB, open jars inside SAB, add your mycelium from agar.

That's after doing at least one transfer of agar to get no contams. Link for that in my sig line blog post too.

the sand is super annoying, and takes a while to rinse out. This is why wheat is the superior grain.

It doesn’t require any rinsing, can be cooked in less than an hour and drys fast (in my area usually only a few hours).

OP: just learn to use agar and sab first, and you can worry about the grains later, one step at a time!

It doesn't matter if you leave some in, doesn't hurt. And is rocks, drops to the bottom of the rinsing container (I use the PC to rinse and soak too). So it's easy to rinse out before you do your next wash.

Last couple bags I've got had none. weird. Probably comes from Russia or something. haha.

WBS (wild bird seed) does NOT need heating / cooking before you PC it, some people make that mistake and boil it since other grains have that. It will make a mess of WBS. Just needs rinsing.

FYI, I use 4 quart jars of WBS filled to about a half inch from the top to make 7 quart jars. The stuff expands, and you want to leave about an inch and a half at the top so you can shake at 20% colonization (likely true of all grains, unless there's some tek I missed.)

I do 7 jars at a time because that's what my PC holds.

Bottom line, any grain will work, just find the right tek to prep it.

I do not recommend rice (unless you're doing PF tek, but you did that, right?) and do not recommend corn. A few people do well with it, but for most it usually makes a slimy mess.

I don’t like  sand or floaters so I had to take time to get all that crap out of the wbs lol
I know it’s not necessary but for me it’s like eatin cap n crunch, i take out all the yellow cardboard bits….

another +1 for wheat, you don’t have to buy 40lbs of it. They sell it by the pound so you can get 1/2lb or 1 pound or even just a few cups to try it out….under a $1/lb right now too
