One quart spawn, two quarts coir I prepped the sub pretty dry. Squeezed it hard as I could, no drips at all

Bags do seem the way to go. Played with traditional bags, traditional bags with extra holes poked in, and ziploc bags.
Def. a fan of ziplocs or unicorns with extra holes poked in.

Well shit didn't expect these to finish today

I just had some very experienced old psychedelic veterans share with me that subtropicalis is their favorite mushroom without question... love these things.
I highly recommend anyone that hasn't worked with these yet, spend the time to do so.

Whatβs the fruiting timetable like these days? Is it still multiple months from spawning on average? I would love to give them a try. The experience sounds amazing. If anyone wants to sell or trade me a print, please shoot me a pm.

I cased a few trays of these yesterday. They are in a JCM-like chamber that's OFF right now. Should I just add water and turn it ON or give the trays a few more days before putting in fruiting conditions?
looking forward to those pins even though they could take a while

I've been casing them when the surface is fully colonized and turning the JCM on. They don't discriminate too much. I've got some in a flower pot that has been extremely over watered and they're doing fine. Others run them in mono's and get great results too.

Hi guys, I see so many people having succes with these nowadays I wonder what has changed?
Iirc in the past ppl were soaking substrates and scraping off casings and doing all kinds of things to them to make them pin, which always used to take very long as well. Has all of that proven to be unnecessary now?
I'd like to try again though. After so many failed attempts with beautiful substrates that just won't ever pin I just didn't see how to ever make them work.
What is the secret to getting these to pin in y'alls opinions? Case at a certain specific moment?
Plz help

I'm not sure if better genetics are floating around. I had to work the same print for 2 years. Patience and maybe a good smack when it took to long was the key for me. When I went back to my own prints I got better flushes. Thinking they just didn't get worked like cubes and pans.
I thought I was going to flood the marketplace but nothing printed. Seems to be a short window to catch spores. Anyone had luck using a wet swab to grab spores from dried caps?

A complete guess, we'll find someday that there is:
Psilocybe hoogshagenii -convex -hoogshagenii -subtropicalis
Right now I have genetics labeled 'Semperviva' in a shoebox. Previously it has been slow to fruit and produces mostly individual mushrooms. I also have some genetics labeled 'Subtropicalis' that just went to sub. They don't seem to take as long to fruit and produce nice clusters of fruits. They have the same subs and will receive the same conditions.
How long ago did Alan find Subtropicalis in the wild and bring it back for sequencing?

I've been swabbing caps when the gills go dark. They're not major spore producers but it only takes 2.

Semperviva, Subtropicalis and Hoogshagenii var. Convexa are the same thing. What Alan found was Hoogshagenii which is different than var. Convexa.

I'll reiterate Psycho above me and say they take two weeks to mature to dropping spores.

They're really stingy with those things too. The cap will fold Ober on itself and some some spore will drop but even then, most of them stay in the gills. I gave up in prints right away and went directly to swabs.

Thank you for straightening that out Dr. Mario. I just found this at the spore working website.
"It has been noted as slow growing and highly resistant to contamination and decay, which explains the descriptive name βsemperviva" which means ever-living. This is especially appropriate considering that this sample was originally collected over 50 years ago and is still going stong. Guzman (1978) eventually determined that P. semperviva was actually a nonpapillate variant of P. hoogshagenii and was then known as P. hoogshagenii var. convexa.
It remained under that moniker until genetic testing recently revealed the species to be conspecific with Psilocybe subtropicalis, only distantly related to P. hoogshagenii.
Psilocybe subtropicalis is the older name, so that is where it stands."

Yeah, lab is closed down and had no swabs available so had to make due with foil.
With past experiments I'll get a heavy initial drop and limited time to move to foil. They curl and dehydrate super quickly on foil. Then again i'm printing at 20% RH.
