Basic Colonization question * 1
    #27797389 - 05/29/22 08:05 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Hi all,

Been lurking for a while but decided to approach/engage the community for fellowship. I’m a new grower, just over a year under my belt but Ive had some great successes and have had my confidence blustered. I’ve grown several varieties over the past year starting with Treasure Coast, golden teacher,  Malabar, APE, Yeti and Enigma, only the APE was difficult and didn’t really produce anything.

I’ve settled into my operation and am fairly comfortable with the way things are going, I have a quick question about when I should put some tubs into fruiting condition. These tubs were colonized on May 1 with golden teachers and have slowly progressed, I noticed a few days ago that some primordia started to appear, should I wait to put these into fruiting or wait for full colonizing which I understand is ideal?

First three pictures are of the tub in question

Thought I’d add a few more pictures of some Yeti that turned out well, thanks for looking!

I put my tubs into fruiting conditions immediately when spawning.

Appreciate the reply! So you would? Isn’t it best practice to wait for the substrate to be fully colonized to reduce the chance of contamination?

Give them FAE from spawning and maintain surface conditions the entire time.  Exposing the surface to FAE has nothing to do with contaminations as sterility is out the window once you open the spawn jars.

As far as I know, that is outdated information.. it is not more common practice to keep fruiting conditions from spawning. As long as your spawn is clean, you'll be good to go

You may want a second opinion from someone who's been cultivating longer, but it's worked well for me so far

My sources are Philly Golden Teacher on YouTube, and really that’s about it so I’m here to absorb as much information as I can, I’m sure my process is not at top efficiency. Appreciate the info!!

as others said, it’s common practice with cultivators on here to just fruit from spawn. at most, i might remove the micropore tape i have over a few holes on my mono during the flush of the mushrooms seem to want more FAE, but that’s not really introducing fruiting conditions, more so just increasing airflow. ideally your tub should be set & forget until first harvest

reddit & youtube are a very mixed bag of info & it’s hard to tell what is or isn’t bullshit. i’d recommend only sourcing info from the shroomery. use the search function & set the advanced settings to posts within the last 6 years for best info. a lot has changed even within the past 5 years & communities like youtube & reddit seem to be way behind the times & unwilling to shift paradigms.

There are so many people who have been mislead by this guy showing up here lately. I have never seen his videos but the place to learn the most up to date and efficient ways of growing is Shroomery. This has been the case for over 20+ years.

Stick to this forum and teks from the past 2 or 3 years on here and you will be up to your ears in mush. This community has people who will help you.

learning noob. I was under the impression that higher CO2 and humidity levels during colonization were ideal and could create those conditions by taping holes until pinning. thanks

As others said either introduce fruiting conditions on spawn or just eyeball it. I usually leave my tub closed for about a week and the just unlatch the lid for no discernable reason.

Philly Golden Teacher is not as bad as the rest of the so called mycology channels on YT but his info isn't always great and sometimes is even mind bogglingly dumb but I got some nice tricks down by watching him when I was bored like how to work in a SAB more effectively and small things like that. I wouldn't follow his teks though, stick to shroomery for the majority of your info and supplement it by watching videos, don't use them as your main source of information.

PS.: Nice Yetis, they are a PE cross, right?

Looks like I have a basic understanding of what I'm doing here (managed several QPs) but now that Ive found this place I will have to do a little reading to get caught up.

So far Ive done all my work in a SAB but am saving the pennines for a flow hood.

Thanks I had great success with the Yetis, they are super fun to grow just painfully slow, Id say at least twice as long to grow then Golden Teachers

In a general sense, cubensis that grow slower are more potent.  I bet those yeti put your GT’s to shame with how much stronger they are
