hi, i'm a complete noob. i've been reading this forum this morning and have realised my first mistake, buying a kit. the kit seems to have made some progress. it colonized and look covered in myc to me. however, after a month of looking the same, i am starting to think its not gonna work. i would obviously like for it to fruit, but it does not appear to have pins to me. there are some patches of white jelly looking stuff forming on top of the colonized sub now.

Welcome to Shroomery
That wasn´t a mistake. You learn from it, but if you do this twice, it will be a mistake then
Impossible to tell something without a picture. Look here.

On the first glance it looks like it's covered in mold but upon closer inspection this doesn't look like mold to me, the surface is too smooth.
Either way this is definitely a goner. To be sure not to contaminate your working area do not open it anymore and toss it in the compost pile/trash.
Oh and welcome to shroomery, I'd recommend you start with BRF cakes as they are very contam resilient and can produce pretty good yields.

Just look what the seedling mat did to the bottom of the bag. These mats always fuck up moisture content. Totally matted.

True, true, I didn't even notice the mat on the first look. Don't use this thing, it hurts the mycelium instead of helping it. Mycelium get warm so it will pump up the temperature in the box by 1-2°C either way, but mushrooms grow well at any temperature in the 19°C - 30°C range (65F - 85F) so just your room tmeperature will be more than enough as long as you don't live in the arctic.
BTW.: I hate it when the shops shove these things down your throat on every possible occasion. It's just a trap for new cultivators, not a big one but it's still infuriating.
