Yellow beads on tips of rhizo in colonizing substrate?
    #27796889 - 05/28/22 08:38 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

I can't tell if these things that just little beads popped up on day 9 since spawn-to-bulk are contams, metabolites, or what. They aren't all over but they're on maybe 2-3 patches of rhizo, in only 2 out of 10 shoeboxes. Nevertheless, I'm a little concerned.

This is my first time growing agar -> grain -> sub. I've only done one other grow before this and that was with a shitty Midwest grow kit (PF tek inoculated straight from MSS). I should mention that I have 1 other shoebox thatS's been growing normally and is about 2-4 days from harvest time. Anyway, here's my process for this grow:

-MSS to agar, isolated to generation 2, then knocked up WBS.
-On May 19, spawned colonized grain to CVG with like a 1/3"-thin coir pseudo-casing layer. Both the CVG and coir were under field capacity and were pasteurized à la Frank's pasteurization tek 3.0. Then pretty much followed the Shaper's SFF Shoebox Tek, except I used CVG+coir and also pasteurized the sub because I didn't want to risk anything.
-I'm in a ~600sqft apartment in the PNW. Temperature ranges from 67-79°F and I get sunlight around 14-16 hours a day. And I have an air purifier running nearby.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Metabolites. Indication that likely your spawn was not as clean as it should be. You might get some fruits before the substrate totally molds out but your sub is going to be toast in a matter of time.

That's what I feared. Is there anything I can do to fix it now (or later)? Or should I just hope the myc fights it off? And are any precautions I should take if these end up fruiting, like should I only open this up outside my apt even if no other contams show up?

I don't know, would it be overkill to lightly spray some diluted peroxide on the areas with metabolites? It seems like a nuclear option, seeing that it's not even "properly" contaminated/moldy yet, but I'm not sure what else I can do in the hopes of having more than one meager flush, if any. I won't stall when I see actual mold—it'll be opened outside and dumped ASAP—but I don't think I'm ready to give this one up quite yet. I'd like to try to save it while it's in its early stages, if that's even possible.

I read here that too little FAE or too much direct sunlight might be the cause of this. The shoeboxes haven't been opened since spawn, as instructed in Shaper's tek, but they have been getting somewhat direct sunlight. What do you guys think?

I'm open, desperate even, to any help/suggestions. Thanks!

It's already stressed, why would you add H2O2 into the mix to make it worse?  All you can do once it's spawned is provide it an optimal environment to fruit and hope for the best.  Thats why axenic spawn is so important.

No, I wouldn't use peroxide... I would just recommend getting started on your next project

Obvi signs of distress but wouldn't these show up from excess moisture in the sub / environment leading to more optimal conditions for competition ?

If the spawn was anexic, there wouldn’t be much there to compete with. With clean spawn you can get away with running wet substrates and thick top layers and high sun to spawn ratios. Clean spawn is key.

:whathesaid:

you can run clean cultures in conditions that would cause less than 100% stellar spawn to get bacterial quick. mushrooms love the water if the spawn is clean, but it hurts more than it helps if you don’t have clean spawn. water makes bacteria proliferate, it’s a good idea to spawn stuff you aren’t sure about to substrates on the drier side of field capacity

Thanks everyone for all the input. Really appreciate it as a new cultivator.

How can I make sure my spawn is truly anexic before introducing to substrate? I know consolidation is a BRF thing but could waiting a couple days help the cleanliness of my grain? Upon ocular pat-down the mycelium looked even and clean throughout the jars and they passed the pre-birth smell test too. Anything else I can do for my next rounds? Thanks again

best advice is to post here for second opinions before you get a feel for what you want to see. im speaking from my own experience here, it’s really easy to miss subtle signs of stuff like bacteria as a new grower. for awhile i thought my spawn was clean because it was white & smelled like mushrooms at spawn. eventually posted pics here & everyone let me know they were bacterial. now it’s really easy for me to see, but until you experience it it can be kinda tricky.

you only need to let BRF consolidate if you’re fruiting them as cakes, otherwise you can spawn right at 100%. what i do with grain jars is shake them when they are close to or at 100% colonization & see how they recover. the final shake is super telling. it’s harder with BRF but just post pics here for some second opinions!
