Anyone have experience growing Burma?
    #27796357 - 05/28/22 11:39 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

I started my next myco project already by inoculating some 1/2 pint BRF jars with the Burma species. I read it’s a fast cultivator and pretty resilient. So far 5 out of the 6 jars have already shown pretty good mycelium growth. For those that have worked with this species, is it best to leave them as cakes and fruit them that way in a mono tub with damp perlite, or what I was planning on doing was shredding 4 of them and making a shoebox with coir/ vermiculite /gypsum.  Should I add a casing layer if I go this route as well, it will be my first attempt at a shoebox.

They're identical to any other generic cubensis. Treat them as such and cultivate at your skill level. Seeing that this is your first go around, you'd probably do better with regular old PF-tek. No need in over complicating things until you got it figured out. It'll probably be much more enjoyable.

I'd shred them to coir. When I was just starting I found that shoeboxes are easier to maintain surface conditions than PF cakes. That's just me though.

Plus, you'll probably get a better yield from more surface area.

Well, one person said cakes and one said shred...

So I'm going to have to mix it up a little more, and say since you have 6 cakes, why not fruit 2 as cakes and shred the other 4 for a shoebox... that way you can get a feel for both methods on a small scale and see what works best for you.

That's just my 2 cents, but I tend to like mixing things up rather than sticking to 1 method.. I've currently got pf tek cake, pf tek shoebox, and grain shoebox projects all going at once

Burma is not a “species”.

Very true, Burma is actually what is called a variety.. Psilocybe cubensis is the species, commonly referred to as "cubes".. there is a saying "a cube, is a cube, except penis envy"... meaning that most cube varieties are very similar in potency and growing conditions. The exception would be any of the penis envy varieties, which are more potent and take longer to grow.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I think I’ll get better yields from shoebox than 1/2 pint cakes. I heard Burma is a pretty prolific fruited and it seems logical a shoebox will take as at age of that as oppose to just fruiting them as a cake.  I checked on my jars today and it’s amazing how fast it does colonize. My first grow was B+ which went extremely well, but this Burma is definitely faster at colonizing
