Anyone use a tent as a poor mans enclosed lab?
    #27795851 - 05/27/22 09:59 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

I was thinking instead of a SAB , has anyone ever bought a tent and use it as a SAB. For example, set it up In your house and then sterilize the interior of it(oust/Lysol)and then run one of those small Room Air Purifiers with true HEPA filters inside of it with the tent zipper closed. Once you do all that. Step inside the tent with your equipment and close the zipper and you’re pretty much an  a sterilized environment  with no air movement. I’m thinking of doing this as an experiment and see my results.

You don't want to use a tent as a replacement for a SAB. Your actual sterile work area in mycology is comparatively small; the area in front of your flowhood or the area inside your SAB. That's true if you are in a closet, small room, or a large tent.

"close the zipper and you’re pretty much an  a sterilized environment  with no air movement"
I don't believe that is true. No way would that area be sterilized and certainly there will be air movement with a fan on and you moving about.

A tent can be used like a large fruiting chamber with climate control for open fruiting bags, for example. But not as a replacement for a SAB. In my opinion.

But I don't want to discourage you. If you have a tent and want to give it a go, try it out.

I have a small walk in closet, no ac vent in there, that i have done some open air transfers with no problems, I was moving at sloth speed as to not stir up the air.

I wouldn’t worry about the fans/filters, just zip up and be still for like 5-10 minutes to let shit settle then move really slow and it might be ok.

Still, a SAB is just simpler, smaller, more effective, and doesn’t take up a huge space.

The good think about shroomery: lots of things have been tried and tested and the best shit is usually already known

The bad about shroomery: lots of things have already been figured out, so to do fun sciency stuff and discover new shit on your own is hard to come by

dont let that stop you, ive done a bunch off ill advised shit

An air purifier running while you work is a no no 🚫 this will knock airborne particles straight into your work area into whatever you're working on. You can use an air purifier in your work space before you work but you need to let it settle afterwards.

I do all my work in the kitchen, inside SAB... Best lighting in the house.  Tent is cool idea for building your own myco-fort.  Once you start getting the swing of things, you will want more space.  The box is portable and cheap, so I'd say start there and see if you need more protection.

If you ever wake up late, and you're in a hurry - you can transfer agar wedges around in the shower while you get ready for work!!  Anyone SAB inoculate in the shower yet?  Maybe I'll start an OnlyFans... tee hee

I meant run it for a couple hours before doing any kind of mycologists work.  That’s what I currently do for my
Current sterile technique. I use a small room and run my air purifier which has a true hepa filter for 2 days straight and use an air cleaner like what Oust use to be. I turn off the air purifier  and wait about 12 hours, then do my work. So far I haven’t had any contamination when inoculating jars or bags, only time I had contamination was when I attempted my first clone on agar. But I didn’t properly sterilize my knife(I bought a scapel and flame
Torch since than) and rushed it.  I think I’m going to just invest an a poor mans SAB than. Your basic mono tub with holes cut out just to do some agar work. Thanks for the reply my fellow shroomenights
