Would you say this jar is good enough for G2G? (3 Pictures)
    #27793024 - 05/25/22 09:53 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

So I am JUST getting into Liquid Culture and will have a much easier time then. I have great agar/shoebox work but not much G2G experience. Plan is to inoculate 6-8 WBS quarts.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

What can you do to prevent that wet look? Since i’ve had my grains on the drier side, it usually only happens where the agar is.

I'm a little worried about the black spot right by the big agar chunk in the first picture.  It is out of focus in that spot in the picture.

Can you take a closer more focused pic of that area?

Everything else looks good to me.

I suspect the wet look comes mostly from condensation formed when the temp swings up and down. I have large temp variations in my room in summer and will always get this look after a large swing, even if the grain looked immaculate leading up to that. It then also performs fine usually when spawned (as long as it shakes easily)even though they say to be dubious of grain that looks that way

But yeah the black spot? Is it one of those little round black seeds that always comes with oats? Otherwise surely not anything good

i don't like any of those jars personally, & that last jar looks especially suspect to me. the wet grains pressed against the glass & inconsistency of the myc are just huge red flags to me. i've dealt with a lot of shitty oat jars & mine that looked like that always ended up molding in the tub after the first or second flush. you can do whatever just to see, maybe your experience will be different than mine, but ime jars like that have something unhealthy going on.

I wouldn't g2g any of those jars. For whatever reason oats never look very good. I know some people have decent success with it but my wheat never looks like that unless I fuck something up.

G2G a jar with just a little bit of seed like 1/8th full.

Put them to some coir and if it works out well send what you saved to grain.

I ended up doing 7 jars with this jar (it was 3 pictures of the same jar FYI.) I’ve had plenty of jars with this wet look since switching to oats, havnt contaminated 1 box out of about 20. Just picked up more WBS though.

I think that black spot is just a random seed, I saw that as well. Good eyes. I’m thinking I’ll used WBS in master jars from now on, i’m also incorporating Liquid Culture as well now.

that’s good then! if you don’t get contams & your other spawn looks like that then you’re probably fine. my oats just always performed poorly, im def one of the unlucky ones with oats

What do you like to use now? I’m using WBS and oats now, and WBS for master G2G jars. I’m trying to make sure my grains are NOT too wet when getting PCed, think that was an issue

im using WBS which turn out way better than my oats but still having some problems with it. i just realized a grocery store here sells wheat by the pound so i’m trying that out tonight; everyone always talks so highly of wheat so i’m excited to try it out!

Why do you think you’re having trouble? With my WBS, I rinse the shit out of them (usually with hot water,) as it seems to work better. Sometimes i’ll even let them soak in hot water for an hour, dump WBS in a strainer then rinse them really well.

I also make sure they’re quite dry before PC. I have an island in my kitchen, I lay tinfoil down and spread the WBS out. Wish I knew a better way lol….

I was replying to hazy…it’s where I buy my wheat by the pound.

I like wheat the best, it is the superior grain

I’ll have to try it out, do a oat/WBS/wheat comparison. What brand and all that do you get? Suggestions on prep tek?

i honestly don’t know what’s giving me trouble with them. initially i assumed it was my agar plates just not being clean enough but shot still persists even if the plates look super clean. i usually rinse mine well & let they dry a fair bit. i used primalsoup’s wheat prep tek, super easy & wheat doesn’t seem to need to dry as long. it doesn’t have a brand it’s just from the bulk section where im getting it from

winco fucking rules lol it’s such a kick ass store

Are you in the states? Any feed store should have decent wheat, although things are kinda tight right now with how fucked up the world is.

Agreed! I used to live a mile away from a winco, but I moved to a different state... I really miss being able to shop there.. they always had the best prices.
