Growing grains * 1
    #27793120 - 05/25/22 11:40 PM (1 year, 7 months ago)

It is now an increasingly common complaint here that grain prices are going up and getting less and less reasonable. I have been exploring the idea of doing a small grain grow, because it seems like I wouldn't need to grow that much to get far more than I'd ever need.

I was taking inspiration from RR who grew his own organic rye. I did start some rye this summer, but from my research that is a longer-term crop that won't even fruit if it hasn't been started in winter.

Most of my hopes are on a millet plot. I planted proso millet about a month ago, and yesterday I started Japanese Millet, E. Esculenta. Esculenta is the fastest-maturing grain they say, it can mature in less than 90 days. I saw a video that showed big plants with a mature seed head after only 6 weeks.

So the reason I chose millet was ease of grow. Also Esculenta is highly tolerant to wet conditions so you can just flood it and it'll do fine.

Plenty of people have lots of room in their garden and grow tomatoes and whatnot, but are still buying lots of grain. I say give some small-scale grain growing a shot.

Also I've been blown away by how tasty these esculenta seeds are, I can just munch them as a snack and they taste nutty and good. No wonder the ducks like them.

I'm doing the same this year with sorghum. We had wild sorghum growing in our last home that inspired me. I've replanted some of it and planted some commercial sorghum this year.

Sorghum's a great option because you can make a sugar from the stalks too.

Grains alone could be used for everything in mycology, even grain water lc and agar - so I guess that a grain grow is all you need to actually be 'self-sufficient' for all nutrients. Sorghum gives the option of making a sweet syrup too which might be good for some LCs. Not sure how hard it is to make the syrup? I wonder what it tastes like.

Next time I'm at my plot I'll post a picture of the proso that has sprouted so far and see when I get some Esculenta sprouts. Esculenta is not really a millet, it's a different genus but they give it the common name.

Proso millet plot started about six days ago.

Closeup. They don't look like any other blade of grass I've seen...

My approach with this grow was to explore the potential of millet to behave as a lawn-type grass and become established in rhizomes; therefore I massively overseeded my plot, planting about 10-15 pounds of proso millet in a small area.

My approach to growing these seeds was the following: I first spread them out over the whole area I'm trying to grow in; next I deep watered until it was soggy for about 3 days. This resulted in the seeds getting buried into the soil and also beginning germination. Later I brought out a shovel to rake through the soil so more of the seeds would sit at the bottom rather than the top; I used the shovel to move soil around. After I saw the first germination I cut watering back but continued to not let it dry out.

I still wonder whether there will be problems to occur once these plants get more mature; but part of me thinks that, like lawn grass, they will learn to cooperatively share the space. Call it an experiment: can thousands of individual millet plants, represented by this overseeded plot, grow as a lawn AND mature to grow edible seeds?

One possible result of this might be that the millets manage to grow as a lawn but don't mature. I hope that isn't the case though. The whole idea and concept of the 'millet lawn' (i'm also trying a wheat lawn) is that these plants might have dual functionality, sometimes just acting as grass and other times growing mature to make food.
