Psilocybe alutacea
    #27791485 - 05/25/22 03:10 AM (1 month, 3 days ago)

I’m 99% sure I have Psilocybe alutacea, found a few days ago in southern Victoria.

Each mushroom had visible blue staining, although only very slight, and was growing from wombat poo. They were surrounded on all sides by subs.

They don't look 100% like P. alutacea that I've seen, which are usually more conical, and growing directly out of dung.
In any case they look very interesting.

Are you 100% sure they grew directly from the poo itself?

Mind you I'm not an expert on Oz funga, but what strikes me about these are the smooth and bluing stems and the almost expanded caps.
Plus the fact that there were P. subaeruginosa growing very close by. And of course, it would be easier to tell with fresher specimens.

Anyway, what I see from pictures as distinguishable features of P. alutacea are the fibrillose stems, white cap margin and more or less
bell shaped cap. They neither seem to blue very prominently, like yours do here.

But hey, call in the experts. TimmiT is back frequenting the board, I guess he could nail these pretty easily.
Heyowana is the one I believe has the most P. alutacea finds under his belt, he should be able to tell
what these are or not, but I haven't seen him on here in a very long time.

Thanks for your thoughts!
These were growing directly from the dung. The caps were half dried out so that probably doesn’t help things. One of the photos of alutacea on Wikipedia show them having dome shaped caps like these though.

I’ve found Psilocybe alutacea in this spot before, which were identified as such by Heyowana (or maybe TimmiT) if I recall correctly.

These mushrooms were also way smaller in cap size and stem thickness compared to the subs around them, probably being about an eighth to a quarter the size.

Because of its neat shape, I guess? Wombat poo is pretty easy to spot, isn't it?

It would in any case help seeing a fresh specimen still attached to the poo.

Not that this really helps with your id, but I've found mushrooms almost identical to those in same conditions Bardy. Same cap shapes, stipes, and bluing in the same spots, growing from (square) wombat dung, and in close proximity to subs. Was under the impression they were P. alutacea. Otway region and central vic locations.

I should’ve said I’m not sure. It could be wallaby dung, but it looked too big, and I was in forest with multiple wombat burrows around the area.

If they are subs, they’re definitely the thinnest stemmed ones I’ve ever found.

I found these in Wombat State Forest Discobean

Case closed. 100% wombat dung.

Subs can be quite petite sometimes and they remind me of ones i found last season, sorta. Im not saying im right, its just my opinion. Hopefully you can keep checking that spot in the future for fresher specimens.

Could be subs or alutacea in my opinion, and they might be too old and dry to ID.

But I'm leaning to alutacea.
