Wisedry desiccant - an excellent doublecheck!

An easy way to check how dry your stored mushroom are. Definitely recommend!
I'm most of the way through my first grow (whee!) and have been drying the mushrooms in my food dehydrator, then collecting them in a mason jar with a desiccant pack to keep things nice and arid in there. The desiccant packs that I use are made by Wisedry, and they have little indicator beads that change from orange to green when the pack has absorbed moisture. Imagine my surprise when I saw green - I was so sure I'd been getting the mushies all the way dry!
Orange (dry) on the left, green (not dry) on the right.
I figured I'd share in case it helps someone else doublecheck their storage conditions. It would have been super sad to lose my jars of mushrooms because "cracker dry" wasn't all the way to "no moisture cracker dry." The desiccant pack will also help KEEP things dry, but I am so, so glad for those little indicator beads!

You can also re-use em by throwing them in the oven for a bit
The problem with "cracker dry" is most people are cracking the stem, where as the last moisture to leave is where the stipe and cap meet. Makes it hard to check
How are you currently drying your mushrooms? Most vets here just crank up the dehydrator to max temp for 16-24 hrs depending on load. A lot of new people think it fucks with potency- but you gotta look at it like tea or pepper. Once that shit's dry it's locked the fuck in. Same goes with mushies. You're biggest enemies to potency are moisture light and oxygen. Lock in those chemicals quick and seal em up!

I'm running my dehydrator at 135 - my default for preserving fruits&veg from the garden. However, these mushrooms are small enough that I'm drying them whole (prettier that way too!) and I clearly underestimated how long it would take for the water to migrate through an unbroken surface.
Next time I harvest I'll take data for rate of weight reduction. Nothing like a chart full of numbers to reassure you that you're on the right track!

I use those same desiccant packs... now I'm going to have to check them when I get home Ive usually been opening my jars about a week after I dry them to check if they're still cracker dry and then assuming they're good to go after that.. I don't know why I didn't think to just check the beads

Lots of data. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23782274 160f for 24 hours. Indicator circle turn pink in the presence of moisture. Rectangle is control. Reset indicator by sticking it in the dehydrator.

I read through that post, but didn't learn too much more. Will still take the "drying curve" data and share with y'all.
(And I am SO getting some of those humidity indicator cards. Awesome!!)

Awesome idea. I was going to test three identical fruits for this as well (whenever I had some lmao). Was gonna do the same test as the link they had up there and keep in separate jars while doing the bendy test after some time. Keep it updated!
