establishing an outdoor colony * 1
    #27790621 - 05/24/22 12:11 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

I have now set up a "retirement home" for my mushie leftovers. It's a small pile of horse manure in a shady spot, and I'm hoping that over time I'll be able to establish a stable colony there. Thus far, I've "inoculated" it with the (kinda lame) results of my pre-cooked rice experiment, plus one BRF cake that never really took - probably contaminated. I'm about to add three more cakes that have seemingly done all that they can in the fruiting chamber.

Now here's my question...
These three cakes are naked (no coir coats - I wanted to see what difference that made) and the surfaces are pretty matted/contaminated. My intuition is to break the cakes in half to give better contact between the manure and pristine mycelium. Any thoughts?

Lol. You aren't going to be introducing anything. Way too cold. Might get a few fruits during the summer. But that's as far as that's going. Like where I live. I promise it's colder here than wherever you are.  And we have four known actives. But no cubensis. So that might be something for you to look into. I still bury substrate though. Cause why not? I already have all the compost I need from spent gourmet blocks. But hell, bonus fruits are always a plus. But like I said, especially if you've not been successful in producing cubensis, there's MUCH better shrooms to eat than cubensis. And I bet if you started looking, you might find something good and "exotic" that I promise is better than cubensis. So either way, good luck and here's to some solid trips! :mushroom2:

Sounds like an interesting experiment!

I think you could break up the cakes more than just in half.  For what it's worth, you can shred up any cakes and put them in a substrate with excellent results for the most part.  Considering the cakes are mostly headed for the grave if they don't go to the retirement home, you can't really go wrong in experimenting outside.

My first moldy jar got thrown in a flower pot with whatever ground soil had been sitting in there years.  The absolute stun and surprise when you just see a mushroom that you never expected to grow is priceless.  :noob:

Just make sure you soak the pile down nice and good whenever you put it all together, and no worries of dunk/roll/or anything else.
