When do I open the jar and make cakes?
    #2779021 - 06/09/04 09:18 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Hi, It's been about 1 week and 1 day. I have 8 jars. All I see is white stuff forming around the jar. Should I wait longer? Is this normal? and do i wait until I see the pins come up? The bottom of the jars are wet but the whole jar looks dry...

Thanks in advance.

wait until the jars are fully colonized, that means they are completly white also in the bottom. then you can birth the cakes. dont wait for it to pin inside the jars

I assume you mean you have jars colonizing.
This is normal, my jars took a month to fully colonize.

Pins come during fruiting, which is when you take the cakes out of the jars after they are covered entirely in the white stuff (aka mycelium).

Yes the jars are colonizing. Thank you so much. So basically it can take up to a few weeks for the mycelium to cover the jars completely...

or even a month.

The humidity is only like 70. The gauge is on the outside of the rubbermaid. I have a blanked covering the jars, is this neccessary? I also have 5 jars wrapped with tin foil over the lids and 5 jars without, again is this neccessary?

Pat

I wrap all with tin foil, I wouldn't leave it open or it would be too easy for things to get in. Some people tape the holes, but an experiment Magash just did showed that no tape was better.

Your humidity is fine, because you put water in when you made the jars so they are moist and the humidity is high inside.
A blanket is good I guess, because you do not want any light on the jars.
If you have a thermometer, you want the jars to be at around 85 F for this stage.

Oh, and if you have the temperatures at 85 most of the time it will probably take less than a month but mine were at room temp (about 70) usually, so it took longer. Also, they fully colonized in 3 weeks, I just waited for a bit longer because I didn't have time to take them out, and most people wait a couple extra days to make sure the inside is complete also.

I have read this is not possible, but I did EQ's and had germination within 30 hours (can't really remember exactly when now, it was 2 months ago).
People have said it has taken weeks for them. Make sure temps are right it will help

Try a search for the old topic, its a couple months old, it had some good info

The cake is ready when you can stick a toothpick inside and pull it out dry.
