Should I hoover and air out the whole place before I inoculate?
    #27789187 - 05/23/22 08:21 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Annnd I think reached the limits of my OCD and will finally start later today

Thanks all!

I guess I'm wondeirng how important air cleanliness/dustiness is here. My main room hasnt been hoovered for 6 months, so I guess I should at least do that!
Or it has no effect and I can keep being filthy lulz.

It's all about clean spawn, the environment plays very little to no impact if you have clean spawn.

By all means vacuum if you want your room to not be gross but it won't matter if you use a still air box properly to inoculate your stuff. SABs/flowhoods and using agar are the two major players when it comes to consistently clean spawn.  But clean your dang room

I don't completely clean the room.  But I will wipe down the table, SAB & various equipment with 20% bleach water.  Wash my hands with soap & water up to my elbows.  Wear a face mask & flame sterilize the syringe's needle once for each of the BRF jars.

Personally in my experience, overthinking causes more problems.  Use common sense & patience.

Back when I first started, I obsessively cleaned everything around, now a days I don’t even wear gloves or mist ISO when I do my agar work anymore. My SAB is also in my unfinished basement. Using proper technique in the SAB has kept my contam rates quite low. I’m sure one day I’ll get screwed by the spore load, but so far, so good.

Running the vacuum cleaner may stir up as much stuff as it picks up. If you do use it, I'd give things some time to settle back down. I'd also check your local air quality before throwing the windows open. If the AQI is anything but good, < 50 ppm, I wouldn't bother.

Thanks all!

I average between 5 and 30 on the US AQI chart over past few weeks.

Im impressed with your laziness and sneakiness, to convince a stranger to clean your place in the name of science.  I would come but I would leak enough divine power from my laziness title to temporarily lose acess to my stench domain.

I havnt been reading too many korean web-novels.

A still air box is the same principle as cleaning your apartment but much better - you will never get still air in an apartment, so working in a box is just much better in every way.

If you really work well and get still air, it doesn't seem to me to make much of a difference if you're operating your SAB in a shithole or an immaculate lab. The point is to create no airflow at all. There may be background spores, but the point is not to let them get on the plate in the first place.

SAB or flow hood with good technique for inoculation, agar work, etc. The purpose of both is to defeat dirty. It's all dirty, don't matter how much you spray or vacuum. So enjoy lazy, but focus on good sterile technique. Once you have healthy, fully colonized spawn, it is game over! Mystic, seemingly doing shady shit in seemingly shady places! Damned ole hero:vinsue: don't let em eat ya!
