Check out this funny mutant 👀

So, I had a tiny tub that gave me some big monsters and after a while of doing it's thing, it was looking rough. I was gonna just toss it and move on, but wanted to see if something would work...flipped the cake, topped it with fresh sub, patted it down good, wetted the heck out of it...

After a couple days, there was a big ol chonker popping up...but then, I noticed something on the side. Now I have THIS THANG

It's a side pin, growing from, the side or bottom of the sub. You need a liner to avoid side pins. It's about moisture and air, not light. That painted black area isn't doing anything for you, liner wise.

In terms of a liner, is packing the sides down just as good? I have only done like 4 shoe boxes like this but packing the sides down more than the rest eliminated first flush side pins.

liners help with preventing side pins

packing the sides helps slightly but i found packing the entire tub helps more, a la p9 pack the sub tek

No, just packing it down isn't good enough. As soon as the sub starts to dry, it will pull away from the side of the tub, providing a great microclimate for pins. The liner sticks to the sub and shrinks with it.

To clarify, I intentionally ran this with no liner. I paint the sides on some buckets to prevent curving when they're still juvenile sprouts and planning on a shallow sub (this tub was used to test out different sop's). I don't bother on buckets bigger than 20ish qt's...way too much work lol

I use 4mil plastic that I get from work for a liner. It's super easy for me to work with vs a staticy ass trash bag

I was mostly remarking on its funny ass floppy pancake look lol

Jesus fuck...would ya just LOOK AT THAT 🤩

This is Z Strain btw ..MSS from TMU
IDK if it's cause the tub is fucking tiny or what, but I used the same syrung in a bigger tub and only got normal sized fruits. This is wild..that floppy one was GROWING FROM THE TOP! (Which is technically the bottom now..boy was that one tough to harvest lol
