Bruising or Contamination?
    #27787295 - 05/21/22 06:46 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

This is my third flush which is why it looks so battered.

The area in question has not changed in the last 3 days which is why I'm unsure. I don't think it's trich but I'm worried it could be something more dangerous.

The tub has been very fruitful and I definitely don't need these fruits so I'm thinking I play it safe and discard.

But:
1. Can I safely eat these once dried or can the contamination be inside the substance of the mushroom.
2. Can I safely clone one to keep the line going?

Assuming nothing is growing directly on the fruits, they're fine to eat, just cut off any damaged tissue before drying/preparing.  Although it would probably work, I'm not a fan of taking clones from a tub with contams growing in it.  If molds get meshed with mycelium (which isn't super easy to detect for newer growers), it will fuck all grows that come from that culture.  Give it a try though if you don't have another option and need to save that specific culture.

Thank you!

That makes my task today a lot easier. I’ll just harvest and then throw it away.

Would a spore print be a better and safer way to keep these genetics going? The tub went through a lot of adversity and it would be a shame to end its lineage. I should have cloned an earlier flush but sadly didn’t.

In theory the clone should be ok if you get tissue from the inside of the fruit, but I've been burned by holding on to compromised genetics in the past and it cost me alot of time because I kept telling myself the culture was a proven one while I was hunting for other causes that didn't exist.  Maybe that was just my noobness 3 years ago, but I'd hate to waste that much of someone elses time.

If you do spores, swipe the plate with a loop so you can more easily differentiate the growth of good cultures vs. possible contams.  If you see any growth where you didn't swipe, you can be pretty sure it's a contam.  It will also make it easier to gauge speed of growth when the cultures are spread out like that.

You know you could always do both...grab some clones hoping for the best and get a couple prints as a backup plan going.  Let the most aggressive cultures win.
