First post! and Harvest day! With pics! * 2
    #27786770 - 05/21/22 11:13 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Hey all!
Been lurking for awhile now....  Starting to get all this figured out, I think

Today is to be my first harvest

If you were me, would you harvest the whole tub and prep for second flush?  Or only select the prime specimens as they mature?

Cheers

Looks like you have mushrooms at different stages of maturity. I’d see if the larger ones would come out with a twist or wiggle and let the smaller ones grow a bit.
What tek did you follow?
Congratulations.

Great first post, welcome! Your tub looks great

I'd pick the biggest ones and let the rest mature.

Done so much reading here... seems like the teks are blurring into one! LOL.
This was malabar grain spawn I purchased from a sponsor to shotgun my growing experience.  Also have half a dozen strains in spore samples for future grows that I am planning to agar>grains>CVG...

This was spawned to pasteurized CVG on May 3.  Chamber was an unmodified 32qt sterilite tub, that I added 6 small holes to about a week ago to increase FAE (Not sure that I  needed to do this... maybe would have had a more consistent flush)

Thanks for the input!

Dont leave big chunks of mushroom like that. Next time grab at the base and rock the mushroom back and forth and lightly twist till it breaks free.

Take a small knife and lift up them chunks you left attached without leaving craters.

I was wondering about this....  If I grab and twist as I have seen discussed the whole thing would come out WITH bits of substrate attached (I did try on the first one)....    I assume best practice? and just cut it off so you dont eat it (substrate/casing)?
I had read someones tek... here it is
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21071408/fpart/1/vc/1
but maybe I am too high or not good at following directions.

You know as they say the 'devil is in the details'
Appreciate all the input!

I think I need to harvest again today as more veils are breaking so I will practice my technique.

Experimenting and building experience....
Bottom half harvested  using twist and pull method....

Top half with a paring knife as flush as I could...

Now I can see the results first hand.

I plan to dunk/saturate and pour off any excess water and will see what the second round does.

It just takes some practice to get a feel for it. You can cutt them at the base so whats left over is basically level with the substrate, just try to leave as little as possible.

If you're drying with a dehydrator any left over coir on the mushrooms will fall off pretty easy as it drys. I lightly brush off  the coir before & after dehydration or snips the very ends and use that for a tea.

Edit: looking at the pictures above..
When I have parts left over usually from dense clusters I had to cutt out, I'll take a parry knife and pry up the excess 'stumps' carefully.

Some people say they're fine to leave them. I personally don't like to. But that's just my preference. The less rotting organic material the better. 🤷

:whathesaid:

It just takes practice.  You'll figure out what works for you and how your cultures grow.

Many times you can break the mycelial threads where they attach to the basal bulb of the fruit by gently rocking the fruit back and forth a bit.  This is especially helpful in clusters where you can snap them apart without having to cut or pull substrate out.

I usually go ahead and harvest the whole thing at once and either heavily spray for a few days in a row or dunk the sub for about 4hrs.

I have found when I start cutting on some of the mushrooms in my tub the other smaller ones will stall out and not grow anymore.

I also don't want any substrate on my mushrooms.  So if I do twist and pull the mushrooms off I take my fabric scissors and cut the base over the trash.
More often then not the twist and pull takes more of the sub then I want it to so I usually just cut right at the base like 0001001 said.

Thanks for the input... All helps to refine techniques and methods!
Next up I will put spores to a no pour agar plate and see where we get.  Such a satisfying hobby!  I may try a journal to help me document so keep an eye out.

I must say I am amazed how small they shrivel out of the dehydrator!  Thought I had some bigguns but nope! LOL
