Grow tents as a solution to contamination?
    #27786763 - 05/21/22 11:07 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Hey everyone
I've just had a really successful high yield of Albino shrooms. It was my first monotub (was using jars before now) and they grew really well. However...

I've now had two grain bags develop green mould. The grain bags are from a reputable supplier, sterilised etc. My spore syringes also from a great supplier, created in the lab under clean conditions. When I inject into the grain bags, I do all the alcohol rubbing/spraying, heating the needle, scrubbing my hands and arms, wear a mask and sterilised gloves etc. But two bags have gone green.
And to add some context, my monotub had spider mould growing in it. Not enough to ruin the shrooms, but it was still there.
The one  thing in common with all of the above is the room. The monotub and grain bags were in the same room.
So my question is : do you think a grow tent would help me get a cleaner growing environment? I don't have the luxury of a lab in my house (!), so I need a dedicated space that's easy to clean, and can be my dedicated growing zone (rather than a spare bedroom). What do you think? Grow tent, or something else?
Thank you in anticipation. Love this community!
MC

The problem is that spore syringes aren't sterile and most are super dirty along with the spores.  That's why its not recommended to go from spores -> direct to grain.

Spore syringes are usually best for BRF jars as they are better and allowing healthy myc to grow and out compete molds and bacterial competitors than on grain.

It's usually best to use a known-clean sample such as from agar to inoculate grains.  You should use the syringes to make up some plates or even BRF pucks and then use those to hit your grain bags with.

Do some searches on  here and you'll get way more information why you're basically asking for failure going from spore syringe direct to grain.  Save the syringes for BRF cakes or to start some agar but prints are better for agar imo.

I think a tent wouldn't hurt but may not help amd you might be better off drilling down into each problem separately. The problem in the bags must be a procedure thing somewhere, and since everything but the inoculation and incubator environment are out of your hands it's a little tricky to work this problem other than getting away from pre-made substrates.

Now the bit of mold on your casing doesn't sound like reason to believe there's a massive mold problem in your house, probably more just an indication that the casing material could be pretreated better or the surface environment could be improved.

Anyway, it's debatable, but I think you're better off investing your time on prepping your own grains if for nothing else you can inoculate quickly after pc and keep all the supplier transit and shelf time out of the equation.

Your spawn was dirty because you went spores to grain, pre-sterilized grain bags at that. It is that simple. You need look no further for your solution. It had zero to do with your growspace or fruiting chamber. It was bad spawn.

Thanks all. All of your replies really helped! Thank you.

I found this post Magic mushroom growing for absolute beginners (a BRF tek for 2013)

So, once the cakes are made, do you think it's straightforward to then get them into a grain bag? Or maybe I could just mix the cake contents into my monotub substrate..?

Perfect world?

I'd get a couple fruits from the brf cakes and clone them to Agar. Use that for grains

No. A tent will not help you get better results.

Using a clean culture would solve most, if not all, of your problems.

Want a clean culture? Agar

I didn't check out the link, just saw that it was from 2013... check out the updated PF Tek link in my signature... might be a bit more up to date

Here is a link for shoeboxes... if you're going to do PF Tek, they work better than a monotub (in my opinion)

Hope that helps
