First time grow. Jedi mind fucks. Advice needed

This was millet spawned to cvg that also had manure added to it and pasteurized straw. Why so much rhizo growth on the surface? There isn’t a casing I spawned with a 1:1 ratio and just save a little cvg for the top layer to cover any exposed grains. I also use dr.mycs probiotics. The strain was a liquid culture when I got it. Thanks for any and all help. I’m all ears. I’m also on the dmt network if you’d like to contact me there as well thank you guys. I know there is thousands of years of combined experience here. I’ve read and read and I’m still reading but I need some firsthand advice. I think I’m close. Btw my temps are 79. 100%RH in a Martha. The air is exchanged twice per hour. I’ve been leaving the lid just sitting on top. Not clamped down. Misting to keep the small droplets on the surface. I’m also fanning now and then

I'd leave the manure out especially if it has wood in it. Causes contam IME. Straw is also unnecessary for cubes, and also just adds more chance of contam. Not sure what advice to give you on this tub, but it may need more FAE, and make sure there is a fine mist across the top of the surface.
When did you spawn this tub? Also, a picture focusing on the surface with better lighting would help.

Thanks for the response! I’ve done a lot of research before I stepped into it and Paul stamets stated that the benefits of properly pasteurized straw are second to none. That straw hasn’t contaminated on me yet and it was in a tub for like a month when I tried my hand at pan cyans. Same with the manure. I had it left over from that grow and I know that manure makes a difference too. I spawned that tub 12 days ago. I had it sealed up while it colonized I opened it at ten days. I think it’s gonna start knotting soon. Just looks a little different than what I’m used too

I see some drops.. you're probably good on surface conditions. Personally, I would leave that lid with some cracks in it or upside down for more FAE, as long as it doesn't dry out. I modified tubs for my last grow like Pasty does Here... Worked really well for me!

I was going to let this thread die, because I'm not really trying to start a debate. But, Stamets probably wasn't recommending straw for cubes. I can't find him recommending straw specifically for cubes anywhere. Also, if you go through like the last 10-20 pages or more of the Picture of the Day thread on here--no successful grows use straw. Just coir, CV, or CVG. Horse manure is used if people can get it cheaper than coir. Personally, I trust most people on here and Trusted Cultivators more than Stamets for cube cultivation.
BTW, most people here don't fan, use hygrometers, or marthas anymore.

Haha yea I tend to go all in on anything I do. Sometimes biting off more than I can chew. Learning from experience is the best way. Ya never forget!! I was gonna do pf tek and graduate to the Martha. Then I learned that u can spawn those cakes to bulk. So that’s what I did after learning that the pan cyans I had on the cake required manure to fruit…. I never did make it to fruits with them. I came to learn that they aren’t a user friendly strain for the most part. So now I have the Jedi mind fucks. And I’m working on isolating my b+ strain. Agar really isn’t hard and from my understanding it needs to be done to achieve optimal results consistently. I’m doing the best I can with the hand I’m dealt. Do you cultivate?

I'm trying to restrain myself from posting, because I don't want to sound like an asshole. But, you should really deal yourself a better hand... Start Here
I know I call myself kinda-newb, but I also have 5 ounces of freshly dried mushrooms I grew at home
I used Bod's and Pastywhyte's Teks

Been a while. Cubes are pretty reliable and the casing looks healthy to me. I think you'll have a happy ending here soon. Not sure about the straw but I don't think it will negatively impact things since it's obviously been well prepared. Yes, pan cyans are generally considered to be for more experienced growers. there's always a lot of bugs to work out in your procedures and techniques when you start, probably better to work them out on cubes. You definitely have a head start though! Enjoy your first flush.

Rhyzo growth is common when spawning to bulk, it’s due to the nutrient drop from grain to bulk media. Straw can often be a one flush wonder but isn’t as contam resistant as coir is. I don’t see anything super concerning in the pics. I would suggest a casing with straw and manure based substrate but I would also not recommend manure or straw for cubes. Coir and verm as the best and most forgiving for cubes. Save the poo for Pan cyans. Also I would be careful listening to a snake oil salesman like Stamets. He hasn’t grown a cube in years, seems like after disavowing the OMC for the last 20 years he’s looking to cash in on the recent buzz. I’m not a fan.
Those trays look okay but with things like manure or straw they might turn on ya in a moment. Keep an eye on it and consider using safer media next time. Straw and manure can work but it’s a more 90’s way to grow. These days we do things safer and less labour intensive with coir and verm.

Thanks for chiming in!! I’m gonna do straight cvg on the b+ that Are coming next. I also took a few pics this morning. It looks like the tips are turning into fuzz balls. Looks like knots to me. I have been leaving the lid cracked. The rh is 90-100% humidifier runs two mins every 13 mins ( to prevent drops from forming) there is constant air circulation inside. And there is an air filter and a fan moving air around the outside of the greenhouse. The air gets exhausted twice per hour. Temps are 77/78 approx. getting a lil warmer during the day. They are calling for 93 today here!!! Should I case it now? Or let it alone. Am I right with the lid being cracked? Or should I remove it completely?? Thanks again man

Ready to throw this bitch in the trash. I’ll give it sometime. I hate going through this stage. It’s honestly why I love pf tek. Don’t have to go through any of this crap. And when I do supercakes they colonize in roughly a week and they put out 10-20 grams in half the time as this bulk grow bullshit has done for me. Wish I had someone to help me out in person. But for now I think I’m gonna stick to my pf tek. At least I get something from it. My isolation of the strain is coming along nicely as well. That should help alot too.

Dude just chill. Your sub in the most recent set of pics looks a bit bacterial but not worthy of the trash. Give it some time. Start something else to take your mind off. I don’t even look at my bulk tubs once until they’re like 10 days old.

I’m trying to. I do have some other projects going. I have a bunch of jars that’ll soon be done. They go great for me!! I’m also isolating my genetics. That’s coming along really good too. I don’t know what I do that Bulk gives me such a hard time?? 4D7207AA18D8.jpg] [/url]

I’d say the manure and straw isn’t helping, the extra nutes are going to require the colony to consolidate them more before it can pin. At the same time you are sacrificing water with the use of manure. I know some people like manure and straw but they are sub par compared to coir verm, especially if you are using a spawn ratio higher than 1:4

Fuck it. I cold shocked for a night in the fridge and then put back into fruiting conditions. Still getting rhizomorphic growth on top. In the pic u can see what it looks like from the inside as I took the substrate and just shredded it and packed it back down. Probably not the best thing to do. But I was just gonna toss it so I figured I’ll do this and see what it does. If nothing it’s going to the garden. Felt kinda dry inside. Should it have been at field capacity or close? I’m not good at bulk grows but do amazing with pf tek. I’m about to scratch doing bulk grows cause I’m wasting time and materials doing it. Two months wasted now fucking with tubs. I could off had boat loads if I stuck to my cakes……. Frustrated
