Did I buy the right type of oats?
#27784368 - 05/19/22 02:14 PM (2 years, 7 months ago) |

So I bought some oats today but I just want to make sure I bought the right kind.

These are the ones I bought. When I looked them up online it said that they were whole oats that had just been cleaned extra or something like that. Will these work the same as the normal whole oats?

These are the normal whole oats that I knew were okay to buy, but I bought the other ones because they were quite a bit cheaper. And since they said they were still whole oats I figured it was okay.
Do you guys think it'll be okay for me to use the ones I bought? Any input would be greatly appreciated as I plan to start getting them ready to put in the PC tonight. Thanks everyone!

Okay thank you so much! I was worried I might have gotten the wrong thing. I've never used oats before so I thought I would give them a try. I appreciate it

I used oats once, bought me a shitload of millet a week later. Had useful growth in only one jar, the rest didn't recover after the first shake. All the other jars that were made with millet colonized just fine.
The only thing I liked more in oat was the fact that I could eat it while prepping, shits tasty.

Well I believe I'll be returning the bag of oats I got today and will be picking up some WBS instead. I was under the impression that oats were the way to go over WBS nowadays.
Thanks for all the input everyone, I appreciate it

Okay cool thanks for the info. I'm still not very confident in my growing abilities, so if WBS would be easier to work with I should probably go with that for now. I'm not trying to deal with oats if theyre harder to deal with.
Thanks everybody for the input!

I buy my rye at a seed bank usually but have also bought it from feed store place and it works great. Been working with it sense 2010. Just make sure you get field rye if you do and not the rye grass stuff that is thin skinny seeds
It has to be washed good a few times. I've found that a 24 hour soak in hot water changed several times before boiling and I get virtually no bursted grains. Less time gives me a considerable amount more, so I try not to rush it.
Edit:I get 50 Lb bags for 23$
Edit again: A buddy of my rocks popcorn and swears by it that its super easy to use. Might be something to also look into for stone producers maybe? Probably better than rye and wbs.

yeah sorry about that I was about to edit my last post saying I thought you might have been talking to the other poster. I am curious though about the rye. Are you guys talking about a different type of rye than just rye berries, which from what I understand is the same as whole oats

I believe rye berrie is just the cleaner version of field rye and has all the hull removed. For mycology purposes field rye is sufficient if you wash and prep it right. No need to buy expensive "clean" rye.

Wheat is another cereal grain. You can get it at health stores or on the west coast winco sells it in bulk for about $0.70 / pound
wheat is the superior grain

It was unhulled BIO wheat from a health store. Pretty pricy at 1,5β¬ a kilogram but it was tasty, kinda like Cheerios but less sweet.

Yeah so after reading some of these comments about people not always liking to use oats, I decided to return the massive 50 lb bag of oats I bought and bought a much more manageable 10 lb bag of Pennington WBS. Since I'm working on my first grow I felt like 50 lbs of oats was just way too much, and I don't have much storage in my house anyways. The 10 lb bag of bird seed seems like a much better option just to get me started on my first small grow. I plan on doing 8 half pint jars of 2 different strains. 4 jars each for 2 small shoeboxes I plan on doing to start. I think one shoebox I'm going to try to grow some Tidal Wave or TOC and one shoebox of Golden Teacher to start out.
I have a few different strains to choose from to start out with for my first grow. Some of the spores I have to choose from are b+, APE(R), Tidal Wave, TOC, AA+, Golden Teacher, Blue Meanie, PE, Jack Frost, and Ghost.
I have heard that Tidal Wave are awesome, along with Golden Teacher, TOC, and the AA+. Does anyone have any suggestions which two strains I should start out with considering this is my first grow in 12 years? Are any of these easier or more forgiving than other strains to first timers?
Thanks for any input everyone, wish me luck! lol -Psychodelicious

sounds like a lot of PE crosses. PE just takes longer than other cubes & requires a compacted top layer or casing but other than that most cubes arenβt too finicky

Do you mean takes longer to colonize a jar, or takes longer to fruit?

Theoretically both but I had PE cultures that colonized even faster than normal varieties but take forever to even form primordia.
Generally speaking PE and PE crosses colonize and fruit way slower than any other cube.
Good call on returning the big bag. Imagine you don't like oats after all and are stuck with 50 pounds of the stuff. WBS is better imo because it has much more inoculation points due to a much higher surface area of the grain.

Yeah I decided to go with the WBS first. I'm going to give it a try first and see how that goes. If I have good luck with it then I'll probably just stick with WBS and then maybe in the future if I decide to scale up my operation I might give oats a try then. Thanks everybody for the input!
